Well, theres modding and then theres preventative maintenance. AND THEN theres "preventative maintenance modding". I have crummy rear shocks, so bring on the eibach. Stock TB butterfly was sticky (not a screw problem), 65mm tb is on now. Header was dented, had a leak, now have JBA. etc, etc. Its nice being able to justify your mods, especially my favorite...

Getting a slightly-used head and putting FR2's in it to replace the tired, noisy, out of lash 160k mile valvetrain that would have to be torn apart soon anyway.

Pretty soon, the bottom end is gonna go south, so it's best to put in some forged pistons and good rods, right? Might as well go turbo at that point for what Karl is supposedly offering :) then bada-bing, you got yourself a Z06-killer at the auto-x with 200k miles on the chassis that can win back its entire costs if you race for cash on a circuit. Ah, post-college life, I can't wait.

Small house, big garage, and a beautiful wife who is perfectly happy with it :) Sarif took the words right out of my mouth.

Worth it.

No it is not worth it to spend all this money on modding a car because you don't get what you spent on it in return when you sell it. In my opinion it is like drugs/addiction, once you have got bitten by the bug cars will always be part of your life.

For me it's all about making the car stand out from the others. Since I have the SVT, it's not all about performance, it's more about exterior mods. I like to have people walk by my car and go "Damn, that's a nice car." I do like to a few performance mods though, so there's some "Go" with the "Show." And since I'll probably be keeping this thing until it dies…it's worth it to me.

I must agree with S2, not worth the trouble all those mods cause you!

If you start adding up the costs, often isn't worth it.

I spent $10k on my car. If I add a turbo kit, LSD, upgraded brakes and suspension, I am getting very close to $20k total, and I am not done (wheels, tires, exhaust and on and on). And of course I own a duratec, so my car is no longer street legal at this point.

For $23k I can get a MS3 with all the "mods" and a warranty, plus things I can't add (VVT, direct injection, resale value, legit stickers) to my own car.

Of course you are going to want to mod the Mazda...

It's worth it to me, but only if it's smart shopping.

I've never once paid full price for anything. I'm an opportunist. When two of my rims got trashed from a pothole, my insurance sent me a check to replace them and I bought four custom rims with the money (2 stock rims = price of four custom rims). When I needed to replace my stock suspension cuz it wore out, I bought the SVT suspension kit for $50 more than the cost of off-the-shelf stock replacements.

Everything on my car is either used, or I bought it for an insane deal. Most of what I've bought has been because something needed replacing over the 110k miles i've owned my car (normal maintenance, accidents, etc.). I've gotten a lot from off the BST forum.

Other than nice tires and wheels, an SVT suspension, and an SVT intake, I don't have any performance mods either... and I'm not in any hurry to buy them. I don't race, and my manual zetec is plenty fast enough for me... although I do keep my eye out and will probably end up getting a full header/catback, but again... likely it will be used and dirt cheap.

I think modding is worth it.
There's always something you can improve on, in just about every car. The money spent might not make sense, but if you keep your eyes open and do things right the first time it's very enjoyable.

I always say "This is what the factory SHOULD have done..."
