You can separate "mods" into 2 categories:

1) To increase driving enjoyment (power, handling, etc.)
2) To attract attention

In the case of #1, it is understandable.

In the case of #2, some people (myself included) prefer to remain stealth.
Some stranger thinks that my car is "cool"? That does nothing for me.
Especially when my car is parked, I clearly don't want it to attract attention (I prefer not to have my car vandalized, keyed, etc.).

Personally for me I don't think it's worth it anymore, just kind of tired of losing money on the things then trading off, no more, plus this new car, just doesn't feel like it needs it now.

Well, now that I think about it I might upgrade the speakers later, beings i just got the basic sound system, these speakers won't cut it for very long. lol

I am going to agree with the FINANCIALLY = NO, not worth it
but for the HOBBY/ENTERTAINMENT = YES

So long as I am not spending wads of cash in one MOD drop I am okay with it and the tuning aspect, as well as learning new skills, is an accomplishment that I am proud of.

I feel that modding makes sense when it justifies the money spent... For example, does getting an exhaust system make sense when there is little to no improvement. I think most of us would probably say it makes a difference whether or not because of a placebo effect. "Hell the nice new sound it makes is awesome!"

However, if you are family man/woman or need a reliable daily driver, keeping it stock is the best way to go...

I sometimes wish I would have Kept my SVT stock, as It is a limited production car, But otherwise I love all the modifications I have done! and wouldn't go back. Cars are ment to be driven, and modifications increase the driving experience Moding a car is NOT an investment. Keep that in mind if you ever decide to sell the car. You don't have to have modifications to be a enthusiast.

How many tangible items that we spend money for actually INCREASE in value, such that they can be sold for more than we paid?

Other than "real property" i.e. real estate, or, very subjectively certain "objects d'art" nothing comes to mind. (And we all know that real estate is a hit or miss proposition, as is the value of that nude painting of Bea Arthur--sorry for that painful example).

Continual depreciation on ALL personal property is a given. You spend a lot of $$ for all of your "stuff". Want to find out what all of your "stuff" is REALLY worth, ie it's actual cash value if you had to liquidate and get dollars, pesos, francs, etc.? Call in an "estate appraiser" to put a $$ value on all your "stuff", and get ready for real sticker shock. Pennies, repeat pennies, on the dollar is what your "stuff" is worth.

Once we move past the basics of food, shelter, medical care and transportation, just about EVERYTHING we spend $$ for, is for enjoyment, to make ourselves happy. Same is true of modding our cars.

I say if you enjoy what you're doing anything is worth it. When I was younger I loved to "trick" my cars out. These days, I think the look right off of the lot on these new Foci is perfect. I prefer the stock look.

I may end up changing a few things with of course the factory parts. I am thinking about swapping my chrome headlights out with the black lamps but other than stuff like that. I am all about keeping my Focus stock. I love the clean, stock look but if modding your car out is what you like more power to ya and go for it!

Upgrading the factory tires or brake pads is modding

So you replace your oem make of tires to a better brand,= your modifing the factory designed tires. You could say the same w/ aftermarket brake pads/rotors or anything else. So ya, your modifing your car w/ aftermarket parts, whether you know it or not. Is it worth it? You could ask, How much is your time worth?
This to the people that don't think modding is worth the money^^^^^^^^^

For monetary purposes, such as return-on-investment and overall value, absolutely NOT. . ..modding a car in ANY FASHION, even the uber-cheap DIY-mods, are NEVER worth it from a monetary or value standpoint. . ..

But, for EVERY OTHER REASON UNDER THE SUN, modding your car is worth it. . ...so, ultimately, the "yes" outweighs the "no", in my opinion. ...
