Driving ATX like MTX? is it possible?

So I am still buffled by the 2-1 options on my transmission.

It seems they shift down to 1st ans 2nd gear.. if thatis true, can't you use it as a mtx?

If yo ustart from standstill, put it to 1 accelerate to desirable rpms, throw it to 2 accelerate again and hten throw it to D?

Would that work or am I asking for trouble?

If you aren't concerned about the longevity of your transaxle, go for it. If you are, it's probably a really bad idea. My old Acura was an automatic that worked in a similar fashion to the atx foci. It had over 200k on it, and I'd paid a couple hundred dollars for it, so I abused that car and beat on it more than I should have (was my first car). Needless to say, I ended up destroying the automatic transaxle on it.

it is possible those settings are there and limit the ability to go to a higher gear than selected. so if you left in "2" you could use 1st and 2nd gear but the car would no go any higher. but as said above the idea of using it similar to that of a manual probably isnt the best of ideas

Using your ATX like an MTX all the time is bad. The lower gears are there for times when you don't want to get into higher gears, like controlling your speed on a hill descent, in the snow/ice, towing [if you tow anything with your Focus].

Plus, you get much better performance from just leaving the shifter in Drive.

From what I hear it is ok to use if just once and a while. Let's say you accidently hit the gas at a light and accidently reved the ricer next to you. Then it would probably be ok if you used it. I use it whenever someone wants to race and I think I can win, but other than that, I just leave it in drive.

Well, you can, but since the ATX shift points are "automatically" adjusted to rather high RPM when you do WOT, I sincerely doubt whether you would get any more acceleration manually shifting vs. a simple "pedal to the metal."

Check out the shift points under WOT and compare to when you would shift manually. Max RPM is not the best shift point, in most cases, for maximum acceleration.

LOL..... i used to do that all the time in the BEAST!! (94 Ford Escort Sedan) ricers would go crazy looking for a modded car to race....me and my friends would just laugh.... oh yea...used to pretend to shift in my atx and it also got messed up....lol...

I hope this is not straying from the topic too much. How is it bad for it? I dont understand.
It does not shift up if you go from 1>2 unless your past the point it would shift on its own. They are just lock outs right?

Take it from all of us here... you can do it if you choose but the tranny's not built with that in mind.

This is what I've found out dicking around with those little curious little numbers down there:

You can "downshift" to second gear for some low speed passing and then shift back into drive.

If you don't defeat the overdrive gear when doing this, your tranny (well...at least my ATX) wants to go past third and directly into O.D.

Third, it's absolutely retarded. So I quit doing it while I still have a working vehicle.

I have accidentally knocked my shifter down to first WHILE DOING 65 on the highway. (I was trying to get my twenty ounce dew out of the cup holder). DON'T TRY THIS!!! Somewhere inside the ECU, it never allowed my car to actually shift down to first. Must be some sort of safety program built in.
