Don't need to use a high temp paint. I suggest using either a gloss or semi-gloss paint to have a more "finished" look. I've seen people use BBQ paint it doesn't turn out well at all. I can assure you that standard paint won't peel bubble or fade.

I didn't notice any change in teh light pattern at all. The chorme that you paint really is only there for looks.
