Anyone have trouble with their key and ignition???

I just bought an 03 ZX3 and I love the car but I'm having a little trouble with it. I'm having a problem with both keys in the ignition. Most of the time when I put the key in the ignition I can't get it to unlock the steering wheel and start the car. I have to keep pulling the key out and putting it back in the ignition and trying to get it to start the car. It's a major pain in the ass!!! I'm curious if this is a common problem with the Focuses and there is an easy fix or if it just just with my car and I should bring it to the dealer. Thanks for any help in advance,

Pete

This is actually a common problem with focuses. There is a thread somewhere about it, use the search and look for ignition lock or cylinder lock or something like that. If its under warranty still I would take it in. I heard it costs about 200 bucks to fix because the whole cylinder has to be replaced.

I won't be able to get to the dealer until Thursday so I'll have to take my chances tomorrow. It seems the car is fine sometimes but other times I have to be a little creative to get the ignition to unlock. Hopefully I won't get stranded anywhere tomorrow. I wish I knew about this before hand.

Any other problems I should be aware of? I have 32K miles on my car and drive 1000 miles a week so my warranty will be up in a month and I want to get everything straightened out before that time.

Mostly in 03s, it's the ignition cylinder. There's been boatloads of threads about it, it's kinda common but not life-threatening or something so it's never been deemed a recall.

I do think dealers are aware of it as a TSB though. A member or two bought the new ignition cylinder and drilled out the old and replaced it himself... I wanna say it was Microtonal...

Try a search for it, constrain the search to Technical Chat, that should be where it is. Or scan the titles of the How-to archive (see the sig), it could be there as well.

Get that IC replaced ASAP or you'll be drilling and it's no fun if you do it yourself and costs a pretty penny for the dealer or locksmith to do the work.

It's not hard to replace if you can turn the key.

I can help you out on the cyl. PM me for details. I have helped out a bunch of people on here for this problem. And this is a problem on all focus" of all years except '05. They all have the same cyl. The new one from Ford is totally different than the old ones.

Yes, there is a TSB (which is not the same thing as a recall). The TSB number is 02-18-2. It gives the information on removal and replacement of the lock cylinder. However, it has one of the older part numbers listed for the lock cylinder. Don't use that one. Use the new cylinder. It is p/n 5S4Z-11582-BB.

I have an appointment to have this fixed for tomorrow morning. Is there any way to know that they will install the new part and not the old one? how can I be sure of this? If they install the old one won't this problem just reoccur?
