another gauge wiring question

HI, ive searched but i cant figure this out. So i have reverse glow gauges with an on/off switch and no dimmer.
I have the red power wire going into an orange/blue wire on the headlight harness. The problem is i want to bypass the use of the junky on/off switch b/c you still have to switch it on before the guages will work with the headlight switch.
i thought i could just cut off the switch and wire those two ends together, but no luck. what do i do?

By the way, this website has been a great source of info for my focus!

Make sure the other wire has a good ground.
The on/off switch may be more than just a switch.
It may have circuitry in it to step down the 12V.
Is it LED? A lot of LEDs run on 5V.
If you wired 5V LEDs into 12V they are never going to work again.

What gauge face do you have?? Assuming the cheap ebay ones.....

All I had to do was wire the red into (tap with a quick connect) into the blue/orange headlight switch and black to a good ground.

So you have a switch as well to turn the gauges on and off? You should be able to just CUT the switch off, use the red wire directly from the gauges (or whatever color is POS +) and tap that one into the orange/blue. Black to ground and you'll be good to go.
