Finding a ZX3 with a Duratec 2.3L

Hey everyone... new to the forum. I've did a lot ot research on the 2.3L duratec w/ the 03-04 focuses but i'm trying to find more ways of identifying a 2.3L duratec. Looking on autotrader sometimes the dealer doesn't give engine pics. Without this or a mention of the duratec 2.3L in the description its hard to tell if it has one. Is there anyway to distinguish that duratec engine in the interor/exterior or even the VIN number. Perhaps a certain digit in the VIN depicts the motor. Thanks for the help in advance.

Okay, here's the VIN code.

The 8th digit on the VIN tells you the engine type.

P - 2.0 SPI
Z - 2.3l Duratec PZEV
3 - 2.0l ZETEC
5 - 2.0l SVT ZETEC

That's for the 2004.

it will be pretty difficult, IMHO. What I do at this point, is do a search on Autotrader.com or something similar, then I go down the line looking for a "Z" in the first half of the VIN. Makes searches a lot faster when looking for a 2.3l.

Also, welcome to the boards, and I know you've probably heard "USE THE SEARCH BUTTON!!!!!" a lot from other forums, but I found that link by typing "VIN" into the search.

Once again, welcome!

That's because in 03 they were only in MA, CA, NY and I think VT.

In 2004 they were standard in those states and Optional in all the others... so if you're not near any of those states you have to find one that came optioned with the Duratec, and there's not as many of those.

It may be tough (on new car) to find because the 2.0 is also PZEV, and you know that Ford is pushing the MPG thing. Additionally, I heard that although the 2.3 is an option, it's not available in the ZX3, which is the one that the enthusiasts seem to prefer. Good luck. I'm from Mass and bought my 03 used, and the 2.3 was standard. At that time, Ford was more concerned with satisfying the smog requirements of the 4-5 states, than the mpg thing with the fed.

So I just got my focus yesterday and the guy sold me a 2003 zx3 with a pzev for 7000. He had to get rid of the car fast. He actually had it mislabled on autotrader as a 2.0l. I guess i got real lucky
