haha dude, that just like saying don't waste your money on Zetec upgrades. there is only a 20hp difference between the two engines, and if you knew anything about the SPI in its former life it was once turbo'd, and if you look at any of the european fiesta's they are turbo'd SPI's stock.

Just because it lacks a cam, doesnt mean its not a good engine, in fact the SPI can't handle boost better on stock internals than a zetec can.

you damn monkey!!!

so does that mean, with tuning that it could handle high boosts, ie more hp, more speed, more vroom?

The SPI engine orginally and escort engine started out with the same block but different bore, started out as a 1.6l then moved to a 1.9l, and now at its 2.0 status, the engine has been around the block alot longer than the Zetec, and has had more R & D put into it.

In 84 to 86 Ford imported the Escort RS which was a turbo charged 1.6l escort, they called it the Escort EXP here in the states. They made some changes one of which was the turbo manifold that was used.

Some Focus guys have used the Escort RS turbo manifold and some have used the Escort EXP manifold to turbo their cars, others have used newly made ones like the one from JGS.

The SPI from what I have seen and from my research was an engine that was made to boost, the internals are enheritly stronger (dunno if its totaly true but what i've seen they are) and just seem to handle boost better.

For example I've seen many escort guys with out any means of good tuning put down over 200 whp on 1.9l and 2.0 blocks, with out any effort. If someone from the focus community put the time and effort into "real" tuning I could easily see the SPI focus hitting 225 - 250 whp on stock internals on a good tune, and I say a good tune becuase it is easier to tune a SPI focus then an SPI escort as we have the SCT, and Diablo sport chips to tune our cars, Escort owns don't have those options.

I'd say with a little head work (Milling the head, IE doing the Hemi mod to lower the compression), adding a custom brass head gasket which will also lower the compression, then getting a good realiable turbo setup with a good tune I could easily say that an SPI could hit 250 whp/260ftlbs of torque.

Honestly, I think 250/260 on stocks may be pushing it. I could be wrong, but I think it'd be too close for comfort.

I may try, though.

well if Jeffescortlx with his hybrid motor, 1.9l block and stock internals with a 2.0l head which lowers the compression, is running a bad tune with bad A/F ratios can his 212whp and 262ftlbs I think with my idea of runnig the hemi mod

makes the combustion chamber on the head more round, right now it has added material to it, if you take that away and make it more rouned like a hemi, then add a thick copper head gasket which will raise the head and lower the compression

With those two sligth changes I dont for see any issues of not being able to his the 250whp/260ftlbs mark.

what do you think is the maximum psi, a well tuned SPI could take

and in comparison what is the maximum psi a tuned Zetec could take
