PCM pin# 21 is crankshaft position sensor + white/red stripe
PCM pin# 22 is crankshaft position sensor - brown/red stripe

i have the spi engine, not the ztech. are these still the correct wires to tap into?

Yes. I specifically looked at the schematics for the SPI for you.

That pic is of the GEM module for the door locks, alarm, etc, not the PCM. The PCM is beneath it in the silver case.

Your PCM should be similar, but like Caleb's it should only have one plug, but I'll have to check.

There is engine RPM signal available at the OBD II diagnostic connector. I can't see why you can't tap into that instead of taking the car apart to get to other connectors.

Ford should be J1850-PWM protocol and there should be a tachometer that can derive a standard tachometer signal from the J1850 signal(contains everything ranging from speed, injector pulse, coolant temperature etc.)

Or you could use a product like this that will work with Ford signal. I beliee this one is for GM signal...

That would be good for its intended use, but not for a shift light or a stand alone tach.

The reason people are asking how to get the tach signal from the car isn't because they want a smalldigital tach readout.

You can do that with the digital section of the gauge cluster in test mode.

Most are interested because their cars don't have a conventional analog sweep tach or they want to (like myself) put a shift light in.

ok i started installing my tach driver but i have some more questions. first, i found the #21 and 22 pins and one wire was grey and the other was white, so i figured that i needed to hook the white wire from the driver up to the white wire on the pcm, and that left the black to the grey. I need to know if that was right first of all. next, do i hook the red wire from the driver to its own power source or does it go to the red wire on the tach? and then i could use locations of where to hook all the other wires up. like what are good places for the power sources and where is a good ground and then what light wire do i need to tap into for the lights. sorry for so many questions but im not that great with electronics. thanks
