Timing Belt Replacement

So I've decided to replace the timing belt on my 2001 ZX3. I'm cool with doing it myself, I figure there's no need to down $150 bucks for a rather straight forward procedure. However, after examining my Hanes manual, I figure there have to be some short cuts. For example, I figure I could cut out the whole valve cover removal by marking the upper most teeth on the camshaft sprockets and crank sprockets in order to maintain the timing.

Any suggestions? Am I completely off base, or what? Thanks ahead of time.

As long as you mark them and make sure nothing moves, also, count the number of teeth on the belt between your marks.

You need to remove that valve cover. Taking any short cuts doing a timing belt on these things is a waste of your time. The timing belts almost never fail on these cars...I actually have yet to see one (I'm probably in the 35-40 range now that I have replaced). What actually happens on these things is the idler pullies fail, melt down, or the mounting bolt shears off in the block. So, replacing tensioner and idler pullies is actually more important than replacing the belt itself. My suggestion to you would be pay a professional to replace it. If your still bent on doing it yourself, get yourself a timing belt "kit" from NAPA. This kit will have everything you need (except tools ), belt, pulley, tensioner, and good instructions. Good luck!

When is the supposed 'recommended' replacement for the timing belt anyway?

Your 01 ZX3: Recomended at 90,000 miles. I would do it at about 80,000 as I have seen the pulleys fail numerous times in the 80,000-100,000 range.
