happen to anyone else?

when i first got my 2000 zx3, it suprised me how fast the engine accelerated. when the tach would reach 4 grand at 3/4 throttle it would feel like it would go even faster (like variable timing or something) now my car (20,000 miles later) has a low idle like its gasping for air, it no longer accelerates like it did before after 4000 rpm, now it just kind of hesitates.i bet your thinking alot of things right? heres what i replaced
- fuel pump recall 2 weeks ago
- fuel filter
- pcv valve
- pcv hose(collapsed)
- spark plugs (not wires)
- injectors cleaned
- reset cpu
does anyone think its a clogged cat, or a screwed up cpu? i also have a high powered audio system that requires two optima batteries. any suggestions would help, i took it to ford and they replaced the fuel pump witch helped smooth out the idle a little but thats all.

Any warranty left? They should be checking the car out a bit better than that or take it back to them and tell them it's still hessitating.

Could be something with the power drain from the stereo. Not sure what you are running with that but my older car has "issues" with the system I had in it. I know with my car now, if the air is on, it does hessitate or run "differently". Could be a power issue in the electronic area....??

How big is your stereo system? Do you think its a weight issue? Also why not replace the wires too, there fairly cheap?

Well, the obvious question is: did you have the "high powered audio system" BEFORE the problem? If you did and the car ran fine, then the audio system doesn't seem to be a likely culprit. Have you made any changes, like new mods to the engine? I'm no Ford tech, but 20k miles seems a little early for a clogged cat... I dunno...

yea i got 2000w amp (rockford 1001bd @ .7 ohms) and two rockford hx2 15" sub (156 db on front dash), but they go in and out every other week (for dynamat and re wiring and other stupid stuff) i explained my problem to a buddy and he said he would "gut out my cat" i guess rip the insides out somehow, he also said ford cat's get real bad rust. if this dont work ill just buy a new cat. no warranty left but ford has 80,000 mile emissions warranty, oh by the way i smelled soething resembling rotten eggs/sulfur when i started my car(thats why he wants to rip apart the cat.) engine is stock besides 220 amp alternator. oh yeah the auto place was out of spark plug wires so i just forgot about them.

Well, when i had problems with my old car i thought it was the alternator. I took it to a local shop where they tested it and it was fine. It was an 80amp alternator. According to the shop guy, it takes about 8hp to have the alternator turning enough to power things. So sounds like with a larger alternator you are taking power away from the car.

well stock focus alternator is what like 90 amp? minus 60 amps to run the car that leaves 30 to run headlights ac and a high powered audio system?

You mentioned gasping for air, and you did not mention if you have replaced your air filter. It's one of the most commonly overlooked maintenance items. If you can't get any air in, it's gonna run like crap! You may really liven it up with nothing but a breath of fresh air!
