Touch screen monitors/ carputers

I was wondering.. ive seen people put a lcd touch screen in their car and hook it up to a custom computer. How does the touch screen interact w/ the computer? woudl you need like a special graphics card to hook it up? i know it can be done. the question is how? :D thanks

not sue if you need any software, i would think so though, but as far as i know, most touchscreens use a RS-232 port, which is the same connecter used for most monitors and is on all the computers i know of.

The touch screen monitors I have seen interact with the computer through a USB or serial port. Basically you have your RS-232 monitor plug in and you have a "mouse" plug in. The screen just pretends to be a mouse input device. If you buy a touch screen it will usually come with the interpretation software.

okay. thats cool. does anyone know a good brand that makes a good touch screen 7 or 5 in monitor.
i would get an in dash but that costs too much and i think if i can plan this and pull it off then it would be cooler to have a comp in ur car than an indash. :p

Alpine makes a NICE 7 inch Touchscreen monitor. I have the IVA-D300 and the screen quality is AWESOME, the touchscreen monitor they have now is JUST as good.

about the touch screen monitors...
I've read that in order for the monitor to work, the car has to be in park. Is that true?

how that works is that the dvd indash players are set up so that they have a "pusling" power signal that the car puts out. The reason why the car has to be in park is that the indash is supppsed to be hooked up that way (if u want to keep it legal).
So to by pass that they have a series of switches that u have to swith to trick the computer to think the car is in park mode.
so basically you can but u need to knwo what you're doing and it varies for different systems on how to by pass it.
