New guy...have some questions.

I apologize if my questions have been discussed MILLIONS of time before, or if I missed the fact that there is a search function.

I just traded in an 02 ZX3 and bought an 05 ZX3. I am starting to realise that there are some major differences between the two cars. Please tell me something about the new engine. Is it bulit by Ford? Mazda? Who designed it? What is the overall feelings here on the new engine?

I noticed that there is no air-filter for the engine...how'd they do that? Is there really a filter and it's just not replaceable?

DId they soften the springs between 02 and 05? WHat do people think about extended/improved warranties?

"Is there really a filter and it's just not replaceable?"

Everything on a vehicle is replaceable, but it is no longer a "service part," i.e. there is no pre-determined interval. You now have a warning light on the dash which will indicate if/when the air filtering system requires replacement. And someone earlier indicated it must be replaced as an assembly at a rather high price, e.g., they indicated something around $300 or so.

But if you believe Ford, most people should never have to replace it.

Here's the story on the "lifetime" air filter on the 2005 Focus:

It's a big 1 meg pdf, but quite interesting.
