I'm not sure myself, but I think I've heard it used in 2 ways:
1. No handles at all: car doors open through some sort of remote thinger... similar to the way the hatchbacks open maybe?
2. No keyholes: the little cap/bezel on the side of the handle doesn't have a keyhole on either the passenger or driver side, unlock doors by the remote keyless entry fob.

I'm doing the second with my painted handles, the color caps I think are ~$12? I don't know if either of those defitinions is right, but that's what I think of... one is obviously much more involved than the other, and probably used mostly for Show cars.

shaved door handles are where you take off the handles and weld or bondo up the holes. The door is powered by an actuator that opens the door when you press the button if you have it hooked up with the remotes, and you have poppers that push the doors out.

Shaving, whether it be emblems, door handles, key holes, etc., involves the removal of these components, and the filling of the holes [professionally usually.]

As far as how you get the door open, you'd have to use a lock-popper. They come in different ratings for different weight doors. The only problem is, if the mechanism fails that opens the doors, you can't get in the car.

you could always rig a back up system where you have a button or something under the car that can operate like the handle originally did.

true, thats why the only way eye would do that would be keeping the stock locks in place and not have the button or switch or whatever be able to overide the locks

You have the description of the shaving. As far as price goes. There is a very accredited customc ar shop here near Philly. They charge $200-300 per door for shaved handles. That includes removing the door handles and locks, the compounding of the empty space and install of the actuator. I believe you have pay for the electronics seperately. I don't know of national chain of places that does this. I would suggest your local custom car shop. Most typical "body shops" dont have experience in things like this. Only problem with that is if ur actuator goes funky on you, you either have to get a new one or enter through you passenger side door until you get it fixed (providing that door works) lol
