Is, Water pump clicking...Should be, A/C compressor clicking..

Hi guys, my wife has an 01 Focus 1.6 zetec.

I don't know if this is normal but there is a clicking noise coming from the water pump, when this noise occurs there is some sort of mechanism on the end of the water pump that either starts spinning or stops. I am guessing that this is normal and that it is some sort of thermo device but I would like confirmation of this from those in the know before i make a prat of myself at the dealers

ta in advance

Fan clutch? forgive my ignorance but is this the mechanism on the end of the water pump? if so is it an easy/hard job? expensive?

fan clutch? on a front wheel drive car? i thought since we have electric fans there would be no need for a fan clutch... or maybe the 1.6s are different...

possibly he's mistaken the a/c compressor for the water pump?

Yeah I'll bet your looking at the AC compressor.

Turn the A/C off and the defroster. Does the clicking noise stop? The center of the pully should be stationary all the time now.

Another case to put in the "solved" file...

Yes you are right, I bought myself a Haynes manual today to find out its not the water pump but as you say its the AC compressor and also my wife was driving around with the demist setting on all the time... only just found out that the A/C is on on that setting so its no wonder she is complaining of heavy fuel consumption.... You are also right that take the setting away from demist with A/C off means no clicking :)

Your good you, you are, your good.........

Ta guys
