Turn signal cancel mechanism

Recently the automatic turn signal cancel stopped working on my '01 Focus and I wonder
if anyone has had a similar problem and was able to repair it.
The turn signals operate normally except that the signal lever does not click back to the center (off) position after completing a turn. This happens for turns in both directions.

The problem just started happening a couple days ago. I assume that the plastic knob or lever that normally is pushed by the rotating steering wheel (and causes the turn signal control to move back to its normal position) has broken off.

Has anyone fixed a similar problem with their Focus? Any information would be appreciated.

I've had this problem with other cars. I know of no solution other than to replace the switch.

If you want to go this route, let me assure you you'll be amazed at how quickly you'll get into the habit of manually cancelling your signal. Then there is no problem.

A couple of years ago my 01 ZX3 did the same thing. I took it to the dealer and within 5 minutes they had the small spring in the turn signal assembly reinstalled.

You can take it apart, its somewhat tricky to do though. You have to get a few small screwdrivers and drive them into the clips to hold them open and the two halves will come apart (I opened mine to mute the GD clicker speaker for the turn signals.)

If you don't want to try to fix it, PM v6focus or go to www.focussalvage.com.

Thanks very much for your replies. I'll see what I can do about replacing the switch.
