Unhappy Timing belt troubles on my ZX2

Need some help with my 98 ZX2.
I replaced the timing belt and got something wrong. The motor stalls out easy and has no bottom end, itís all revs like a Honda. I checked all the timing marks before starting the motor and thought everything was cool. I checked the instructions with both the Hayes manual and the ones that came with the timing belt set. What can I do to fix this? Did I mess up the VCT some how? Any help would be great.

is there a misfire some where? check timing with a timing light. Go back and recheck the marks that the belt didn't skip a tooth and the helt is nice and taught. If you have no power down low it definately sounds like the timing may be too advanced or too retarded.

you probably didn't quite tension it properly so it skipped a tooth

there is no VCT to mess up, so rule that one out. Im going to guess your timing is wrong. I second checking it over with a timing light and making sure you tensioned the belt properly..

ZX2s have VVT on the exhaust side...its part of the emissions control system, they don't have an EGR system like we do as a tradeoff. Although I doubt that it would cause the problem you're describing, it might be something to look into.

actually, if the timing procedure isn't followed correctly, the VCT will not work properly. the VCT depends on the pulley being in a certain position when it is tightened to the 0 degree times camshaft.

Some more info and questions that can shed some light.
Yes this is on the ZX2 Escort not a ZX3 Focus. You guys seem to know more about the motor than most the other Ford small car guys and this is why I ask for your help. I have been trying every Form forum tiring to find the proper way.

Tension is correct. That is very easy to do I know that is good.
I thought I had all the timing marks set but the instructions had some different looking marks. I would like to find a way to verify the marks if possible.
I did turn the motor over by hand to see that I would not crunch a valve and it does run and does not show any sign of crunching, thank God.
Some people in the other forums have said to stick a screwdriver in cyl #1 and find TDC that way rather than using the marks.
When the motor is in TDC what should the cams look like? How can I tell if they are in the right spot?
How can I reset the VCT?
I sooo wish I had the money just to take it to someone to get it right but it really was not that hard of a job except for this problem.

when the cams are properly lined up and the crank is at TDC cyl 1 compression, the intake cam should have the cylinder 1 lobes pointing toward the back of the car, and the exhaust cam should have the lobes pointing toward the front.

Correct face the cam lobes facing apart. You should have gotten a cam alignment tool. There are indents on the cams opposite of the cam gears you stick the alignment tool there and stick the belt on. Of course after cylinder 1 is at TDC.

there's actually two timing tools, though if you're real careful you only need one. one is the cam alignment bar, the other is a crank TDC peg. you remove a blanking plug from the block and put the peg in and turn the crank over until it hits the peg. now you're at cyl 1 TDC
