I am not familar with the dash/golove box construction, so right now I cannot give a good answer to your question. However, I am buying my first Focus on Monday, assuming they get two door dings out satisfactory.

If I do purchase a ZXW on Monday, I will take a look at the construction and give you an opinion.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Congrats on your new Focus. I hope they get the dings out o.k.

here's the facts, the cross car dash support and IP brackets are an uncoated mild steel, this is used because it's cheap, it's strong, provides good grounds, and is never seen by 99% of the customers. Once the oxidized layer forms over the surface it acts as a coating and the core steel is safe from further erosions. how many 50's era cars have you seen that are 100% covered in rust but totally solid? A lot. this is because the guage of the steel is thick enough to maintain its strength while a layer of oxidation has coated it.

Yeah mine's no worse than it was 2 years ago, the tubing is pretty thick, I doubt it'll "rust through" and put holes in it or anything.

I bought my car to the Dealer yesterday. Talked to the Service Manager. He basically told me the same thing that everyone told me on this Thread. He said that once the metal is all coated, it won't get worse. Everyone at work was telling me that this might effect the wiring in the future. So I told him this, the SM assured me that it won't.

I do feel a lot better about this after talking to the SM and also by reading some of the replys here. But I'm still a little bit concerned by this. I just wasn't prepared to see Rust/coating on my new car. I was totally shocked when I saw this.

I love my new car, and am totally happy with my purchase .

Hope everyone has a Nice Day!

As a side note, I just noticed that the # of posts I have is 0. Does anyone know how I can change this to reflect the correct amount of posts I made. Thanks!!

KAG, glad you feel better about the rust after talking to the dealer. I'm sure it's nothing out of the ordinary and shouldn't negatively affect anything in the car later in its life. If you'd like I can see about getting a pic of my 2 year-old rust, it looks the same as it did July 2003.

As for the posts, there are certain forums here that don't count towards that number: Focus Gen Chat, General Chat, Marketplace... Other forums like Performance Chats, Showroom, etc do add to your count.

Hey Lil PZEV - You don't have to post the pic. Thanks for the offer though. I really appreciate it.

And thanks for letting me know that certain forums don't count towards the number of posts. I was wondering why my # kept on indicating that it was 0.

Have a Great Day!

What everyone else said is definately correct about the untreated metal. But also be sure that water isnt getting in from a bad windshield seal or something. I noticed some rust in my 04 right after I bought it, and it was from a faulty seal around the windshield (however, the interior carpet was also soaked). Not trying to scare you, nor does it sound like this is your problem. Just be sure to cover all your bases.
