Just picked up a used 2008 SES with automatic. My other vehicle is an 1999 F-150 (rated at 19 hwy) that I get about 18 something with, even after 183,000 miles. The F-150 has synthetic oil and a K&N air filter catridge and I try to drive smoothly at about 62-65 on the highway to work, with a blast out of a stoplight once a week or so. As far as I can tell the Focus is bone stock with just 40,000 miles and I'm driving it pretty much the same way and the first two tanks compute to just over 33 mpg. Taking a trip from Virginia Beach, VA to upstate NY tomorrow (leaf season), with a full trunk, my girlfriend over the hills of PA and NY. Still, I'm hoping to see maybe 35 on the trip. When it needs an air filter, I'll probably do a K&N catridge, although the stealth CAI post looks interesting. (I'm not paying $200+ for a CAI kit.) As an engineer and amateur blacksmith I'm sure I can copy the stealth design. And I'll probably go to synthetic oil, it seems to improve my F-150's mpg 2-3% fillup after fill up as well as lasting longer.

MPG update from Pulaski NY. My culmulative MPG for the 1500 miles I've owned the car is just under 35.

2001 ZX3..My average (which is always highway/city mix) is 30-32MPG's.

I recently had a new fuel pump/filter put in, before that, my average was 26-28, and my first tank after that was 35+ with almost all highway driving and a strong wind at my back. I was amazed at that tank. LOL.

Oh, and I definitely drive "sporty" most of the time. So, this is what I get without grandma driving.
