actually the size of the ZTEC gas tank is 13.4 GAL. i think i get pretty good mileage...all highway...210 mile round trip commute usually lands me around 34MPG...i am confident, however, that i hold the record for miles driven on a tank 460. When i filled up i put 13.5 gal in it, guess i filled up the pipe to the tank too. My light comes on about 360 -370 miles, but you can safely drive it to 430 miles before refilling.

Funny my manual states that i have a 13.2 gallon gas tank. I believe that there's a slight difference between the years though....

Update: I just filled my tank and got 27.3 mpg. Almost 3 mpg more than fillup #1. I'm guessing that after its broken in and I do a few things to help increase milage that I will be over 30 mpg. At least I'm hoping so. I wonder if I'll get luck and get over 35 mpg all city. My best mpg all city on my aspire was around 35.

That is in part because you are getting more gas. Pumps give you _corrected_ measures to 72F. Read the fine print on the pump. So while you pay for 40 litres, you may only get 38 when its cold. The rest is air temp.

One thing I found recently is that the EGR pressure sensor problem affecting most 2000-2002 Focus can really affect fuel economy, before the sensor actually fails. The problem is that if the EGR fails it will be fixed under warranty, but if it needs to be replaced out of warranty is $120 for the replacement kit, because the new EGR won't fit in the old rig. In Canada, Ford extended the warranty to 40,000 km (just 26,400 miles), but mine failed at 47000-so I got bent over the parts counter...fuel economy and power went up with the new EGR.

There may be a recall coming on this, the NTHSA has several open investigations on EGR failure causing stalling, power steering loss and crashes.

With my stock 01 zx3 I consistently see about 30-32 mpg, 60%HW, 40% city. I think I could do a bit better because the tires are very old and there is that part throttle stumble that still needs to be fixed. I did notice that switching to 0-20 synthetic improved mileage by about 2 mpg, I also keep the stock 205--50-16s on the firm side and shift below about 2500 unless I'm in flog mode. My sister says she gets about 34mpg in her 04 zx3 without trying to hard. My ex would consistently only get 22.6 mpg in her 03 GTi vr6/6spd, that car would blow the doors off my hamster powered Ford but I swear you could see the gas guage plummet every time you got on it.

I thought my owners manual stated 13.4 for my focus (2000 zx3), but i'll double check...could be 13.2. You gotta really want that gas mileage...Im a firm believer in the premise that a car "programs" itself to run optimally for your driving habits. From the day i purchased my focus my driving has been 99.9 percent highway driving. If I was to drive for while in the city, then drive highway, my mileage would be down. After a few days of steady highway driving, my mileage would be back up to 33+ mpg. I even noticed my mileage dropping significantly after an oil change. The new oil is thicker, more reisistance in the engine, fuel economy drops off. After 125k miles in 3 years on my focus...i have this mileage thing down to a science. 5 speed, no cruise control...shift at the light ALWAYS, neutral on the downhill sections of interstate (about 8 miles a day on my commute). I even draft off the tractor trailers when im really pushing it lol. But seriously 105 mile one way commute, *2 days = 420 miles, around 430 after lunches and I fill up...when i drive it that is, i said before i parked the focus and am currently running the wheels off my geo storm gsi.

I hit 36.5 mpg on steady 75mph cruise control driving non-stop. This was at about 5000 ft elevation. That's a 2.3 wagon MTX. I could hardly believe it and I may never have the conditions to duplicate that feat again. Tank was equally topped before and after to the best of my ability. Next tank involved some long climbs and AC was on most of the time and I got 33.5. Average over 2 tanks was 34.98 mpg. In mixed driving I like to punch the 2.3 now and then and it's looking more like 28.
