MT, 27mpg, and a lead foot.
The only way I could be easier on my car would be to drive it "Fred Flintstone" style.

How is the oil level doing? Even if it's not burning, I'd check compression. I'd also look at decarbonating with either the MMO soak trick or water through the throttle plate.

Doug
The oil level has maintained FULL sense I changed it near 3,000miles ago. I doubt that anything is wrong in the cylinders because whe I got the car I changed all the tune-up stuff including the sparkplugs.
The plugs were Clean! no crusties, carbon or otherwise, No soot, and the burning color was pretty good. So that pretty much rules out oil burning (oil rings are controlling oil well)

When I changed the air filter, PCV valve, and the crankcse vent filter there wasn't any signs of blow-by, (no excess oil in or around the intake) so I feel pretty good about the compression rings are managing the compression okay.

The best sign that I have of a problem area is the fuel system, I'm pretty sure the fuel filter I took off the car was the factory installed one, it was a motorcraft, and when I changed it I left a little of the fuel in it. I put my fingers over the inlet and the outlet and shook it, then I dumped the fuel out the inlet inlet The fuel was coal black! it didn't look anything like gasoline, it was packed full of crap, about 87,000 miles worth. (the worse I have EVER seen)

I can't figure some people, I mean the car had,
Clean PERFECT oil in it!
A clean K&N $50.00 air filter,
Perfect looking transmission fluid, (it was a quart over filled),
It had those High Dollar Iranium spark plugs in it,
But Oh No! lets don't change the fuel filter, Nope, its only six years old
Anyway, I'm also thinking about changing the up-stream O2 sensor, it may be off in reporting the fuel air mixture a little.

I just finished up tank number ten,

29th Street Gomart
89 oct (plus grade)
341.8 miles,
11.71 gallons,
29.18 mpg (I almost broke the 30mpg barrier)

Tomorrow I'm going to stop and pick up a cleaning kit for the K&N air filter that came with the car and put it back in and see if it helps the gas mileage on tank numeber eleven.

Only filled my 01' wagon about 5 times so far.

Tank 1:
90% city driving: 23mpg

Tank 2:
70% city driving: 22mpg

Replaced fuel filter & spark plugs as well as plugging 2 leaky tires so I could inflate them to 34psi

Tank 3:
90% highway driving: 31mpg

Tank 4:
100% highway driving: 33.7mpg

Tank 5:
50% city/highway: 25.8mpg

I'm not impressed or disappointed with the mpg's I'm getting. 25 is what I expected from a crappy Zetec + heavier wagon anyways.

I'm positive my sputtering fuel pump is decreasing my mpg by 1-2..gonna take it to the ford dealer soon to get that addressed. Plus I know my alignment is off in the rear which could be affecting economy a bit. I should be able to bump the econ to 27 average if I work at it, but for now I don't feel like spending the money.

We drive Scions, it's not like we'll be breaking any speed records any time soon. We are slow as hell, but dammit if we can't look good doing it.

Gotta love diesel ;p

Getting 47mpg.

I drive reasonably fast with revs usually over 3.5k in all gears.

Village and country roads.
