SVTF vs 1.8t GTI
so today me and my buddy swapped cars for alittle. He has an 01 1.8t GTI w/ CAI, greddy exhaust, diverter valve and boost controller set at 15psi. My car, 02 SVTF w/ CAI, TB, and hynotic tune (best ever
). So we get going down the road, on the highway at speed, his car pulled about a car and a half on me. We got into town and stopped at a light, when it turned green we both took off, and to my surprise, my car was right w/ him the whole time until we let off, my car was right at his door and he got a bad launch his car never pulled at all. I was quite surprised at this, I think if he was runnin stock boost, my car would have pulled away. Stock to stock i donno who would win, it would probably still be really close.

From what I hear it dosent take much to make a 1.8T to become a rocket.

^^^ yea that is true. if you chip one, it raises the boost and redoes all the timing curves and such much like a reflash on our cars, except on the 1.8t, you see about 30hp at the wheels, for about the same as what we pay for our reflash. And yea, they are heavy S.O.B's, somewhere around 3300lbs i think, and the VR6 ones are even heavier, VW apparently never saw the point in making a light car.

Same as the jettas, Passats, Audis, Skodas, Seats... Just all kinds of different HP levels.

Stock for stock the 01 1.8t's were only making 150hp at the crank...that motor always seems and feels much faster then it actually is. It would be close, but im sure the SVT would inch out....top end power on those early 1.8t's is terrible, ko3 runs out of steam really quick.
the 02 and later 1.8ts are a different story. 180hp with just as much if not more torque. These things are pretty quick out of the box despite their weight. stock for stock an svt would most definitely not win in a straight line. Sounds like you had a good race...im a bit surprised at how the gti did..he definitely should be pushin a bit more if you were hangin that long with him. boost controllers and chips generally put 1.8ts at around 170-180 hp at the wheels, with like 200 lb/ft or torque. There pretty much is no chance a svt can catch a chipped 1.8t unless its sporting FULL bolt ons or boost. my all motor Corrado SLC still had trouble with them after cams and headwork and everything. and i was making 185 at the wheels. 1.8ts are definitely not to be taken lightly, lol

man you had a corrado, i envy you, but i absolutely love corrados, i was looking for one for about a year, couldnt find one and refused to get a G60 due to the SC being so unreliabe, ended up w/ a VR6 passat that was a nightmare as well. oh well back on topic. Yes the 02 and older 1.8t have a decent amount more power, my other friend who has an 03 GTI w/ just an intake ran a 14.9 at the track, once he gets his chip, i would never stand a chance, you can have a trial program installed, it last for like 3 hours ( i have no idea how that work but whatever ) and when he had the trial program installed, holy crap what a difference, that thing was at 110 in like no time flat.
