Lightbulb Sweet Silence!

Alright, I know how notorious that Cat Heat Shield Rattle can be, so I'm just going to post how I fixed my problem...

First, head to your nearest department store and pick up a band clamp that measures about 15'' long...or in my case, pick up a few different sizes so you can match for the best fit. Wal-Mart has two packs that are down the Plumbing Isle...one set is in a clear plastic bag, the other set is in a small red package with a see-through window. Cost= about $4.

Take the clamps and run one of the ends into the other, just enough to get a secure connection.

Jack up part of the car, crawl under, and loop the end of the clamp around the Cat Shield, taking care not to pinch the wire dangling near the posterior end of the Shield.

Tighten accordingly, equally on both sides of the clamp. It needs to be pretty darn tight, that heat shield can still rattle if even the slightest bit loose. Tug, twist, turn the clamp to get rid of all slack.

Continue tightening until satisfied, and give it a good smack with the screwdriver to let it know it was a bad boy.

Wowsers, now doesn't that sound better!

LOL...nice how-to

Here's what I did:

1. Take car to dealer

2. Complain that the cat shield is rattling

3. Car comes back a couple hours later with the cat looking like yours

lol...dunno, maybe my dealership is just a smarter one, but thats what they did....put a metal band clamp around the whole thing. They told me that was Ford's repair method for those heat shields.

Good write-up, though. For someone with the tools (jack) and ability, the job would get done a lot faster than taking it to Ford.

Yeah, I had thought about just ripping the dang thing off (that would have been more fun), but then decided to be a little more constructive with the matter.

Anyways, hope this helps the few folks who have yet to figure out what that darn noise is at 1800rpm...

Rock on

mine went like this.

1) tighten bolts
2) slide fingers between cat and heat shield and pry down all four corners
3) go ice fingers

Here's what mommy should have told you to do when you downshift:
1. Step on the clutch
2. Simultaneously slide the shifter into a lower gear and give the throttle a quick, amazingly precise jab to rev the engine to exactly the rpm it needs to be at in the next gear
3. Quickly let out the clutch

Oh sure, It takes a few thousand tries before you get the timing and precision of your jab just right, but the reward is that you no longer suck.

Yeah but I've taken my cat off so many times (beacause I run an ORP sometimes) that I'm thinking that were the screws go in have become worn to a point that it's easy for the bolts to loosen up on their own. Oh well, soon as the cash clears it's off to Wayne for an R/T high flow along with the tune.
