Center Console Question - Best Way to Change the Color

As I make modifications to my interior and exterior, I would like to ask you guys for your opinions.

Ideally, I would like to take the entire center panel (cupholders to single cupholder in back) and change the color to flat black. Personally, I think that doing so with vinyl will be a chore, but I've never done vinyl before. I think that painting the piece flat black would just be weird, no? I can image it getting messy real quick and I'm unsure how cleaning the paint would go.

Any input would be great!

Best and easiest way to change the color of the console is to either swap with someone that is wanting your color, buy one that matches the color you want or paint it yourself. If you paint it yourself, be sure you follow the directions very clearly or you will be having a chipped paint problem within a year.

Painting it is easy; clean it with soap and water, wet sand with 600 grit, wash it again, let dry, spray with adhesion promoter, after 10 minutes spray on your color coat. Consider using vht vinyl paint or duplicolor vinyl paint. Apply as many color coats as desired. Spray it with a flat uv clear for added protection.

I have painted many consoles for others and myself and they have all turned out great. Just read the directions on the can and be patient with the process.

Question:

Why 600 grit sand paper? It is so fine that I can't see it doing much to the surface of the panels.

600 will help clean the console of oils and other contaminants that could ruin the finish or cause fisheyeing on the base coat. Also 600 wont change the shape of the plastic console if u sand too hard

Can I do the same thing with the top of my center arm rest/console? I mean in terms of sanding the top of the arm rest.

All I did was clean and spray. No amount of change thrown into my cup holder has scratched any of it off yet. Been at least 2 years.

Best thing for the armrest it self is take it to a car interior shop and get it re-covered.

Actually, the best thing for the armrest is to just scrap it. Find a console without the armrest!
