Rose colored glasses it looks like.

'89 323 had only 1.6 avail. at 82 hp. and a rated best of 28-33 Hwy.

110 hp for the SPI rollin' a heavier car & still getting better mpg would be a fail?

First, a sincere "Thank you" for trying to help. I appreciate it, especially in the middle of this snark-fest.

Maybe I was being too subtle. My posting was intended as a semi-humorous comment on the content of this thread. I'm not faulting the OP; of course every thread doesn't have to be about finding headers or throttle bodies for SPIs, but I'm wondering why members with neither questions nor information relevant to the subject of this forum feel the need to come in here just to argue and bash the SPI. There's nothing wrong with correcting misinformation, but the postings here go way beyond that. I'm especially disappointed that one of the prime offenders is a moderator, and I wonder if he'd tolerate the same behavior in the forums that he moderates.

Well... now I'm being snarky and off-topic. (I at least admit that I'm too opinionated and reactive be a moderator.) Feel free to rip me a new one. I'll drop myself a nasty PM.

I know lol. I am open to correction. in fact, that's one way to learn. and I know the spi isn't powerful or crazy reliable. but I know so many people who have had great luck with theirs. actually, now that I think of it, the only people that I know that say they have had problems are strangers on the internet. if a valve seat goes on my spi I'll just rebuild the motor and turbo it.

It's hard to deny that there's a problem with SPI valve seats, though opinions differ about exactly how common it is or what contributes to it. If you wait for it to go, it will end up costing you more money, but that's obviously your call to make. I got lucky (sort of) - mine developed a head gasket leak first (my fault for bad cooling system maintenance) and I swapped in a rebuilt head with improved seats. As a wise man once said, if you fix that one fatal flaw it's a good motor.

in all reality is that if my valve seat does go and It does to much damage, I will just scrap it and buy a newer ztec focus or duratec. they both come with the mtx-75 instead which I think is a better box than the ib5. and the zts/zx4 have better wheels anyway lol. or maybe I'll save you and do a ztec swap. or maybe when I hit 100k I will do the head swap with my timing belt change. oh the choices!

Man it always hurts to see a perfectly good engine tear up like that. I was going to say as well there is no way on earth that '89 Mazda 1.8 made 130 hp. Somebody trippin' there.

Caught your humor Reid, almost threw you a comment about the performance stickies up top & that most of the performance info. is in OLD threads for these - keepin' them going is the more current topic.

New replacement heads being avail. says something about how many run into problems, that's not a common replacement part for many cars.

Kamaaina's got his under control, it always hurts to see a decently maintained example go bust.

I purchased my Focus for $10k new in 2003. In 11 years and 130k miles it needed nothing except maintenance and an alternator. what more can you ask for from a cheap econo-box? What other $10k car from 2000-2004 is better?
