2000 focus SPI piston ring gap orientation

Getting ready to put my pistons in my sohc motor and can't get find an illustration for the orientation of my rings. I have the ford manuals for the car and they say "use ring expander for rings and install piston" not very informative. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Haven't seen an SPI recommendation myself, every manual I've seen in the past mentions 120* intervals so you're putting the gaps at three different points of the circle. You also avoid lining them up at the 90* points - lined up with the wrist pin or front/back sides. Double oil control rings are offset about 20mm. then treated as one gap.

I'll move this to the SPI performance section where you'll find the most rebuild information.

Welcome to FF!

Generally you'd align the compression rings and oil ring gaps so that the gaps are offset. So if the top of the piston were a face of a clock, the top compression ring gap would be at noon, second compression ring gap at 4 pm, top oil control ring gap at 8 pm, oil control ring spacer gap at noon again, lower oil control ring gap at 4 pm. Simply put, there is no hard and fast rule; the gaps however should not align so as to form a passageway from the combustion chamber right through to the cylinder bore/crankcase.

Edit: sailor beat me to it.
