Rear Lower Control Arm

So I was on the track today with my 02 SVT and all of a sudden, my car made a pop noise and i heard a bunch of grinding. I immediately got off the track and my rear lower control arm was sheared in half. I had absolutely zero warning that there was a problem. There was no clunking or weird driving characteristics. Everything on the car was completely stock. I have hard of this happening with really large sway bars but i was just curious if anyone has had this problem. I am shocked that at component that critical could snap like that. I am now replacing both of them and hope I don't have that problem again.

At least it happen in a place you were able to pull off the road. See if you notice any cracking on the passenger side when you go to replace them.

Like said above at least you weren't on a public road. Could be rust had something to do w/ it breaking or cracking like that? And that was w/ the stock bar too, wow.

Very bad it happened but your very fortunate to have it happen is such a controlled environment!!!. Looking at the break it looks like there's a good portion of the fracture that has been rusting judging by the rust dust around it.

IIRC a reinforcing plate was std. for the SVT where the bar connects, got added to all replacement arms later.

Not the first broken one seen, fortunately doesn't happen TOO often.

That one does look like it was cracked for a while - part of the break is rusted & part fresh.

What brand of LCA did you buy? I was surfing for LCA options (a couple months ago) and was tempted by some cheapo stuff I saw online->

you must be a relatively recent Focus owner, because those of us who have driven Ford's for several decades are shocked when things like that don't happen.

A suggestion from a fellow rust-belter: while you're under the rear end, check the integrity of your subframe. On the back-half of the vehicle, the only things that aren't thin stamped steel are the coil springs, fuel tank, and brake drum/rotor, and if your LCA was corroded enuf to snap, then your crossmember might not be far behind. Mine's probably got another 6-12 months of life left in it, altho if you see my obit in the newspaper, you'll know that my guesstimate was way off.

That occurred to me about 4 years back. I replaced both with updated lower arms. The new ones regardless of SVT or not have the brace IIRC. But might as well use the SVT part # just to make sure.
