Looking at Volt 2014

Hello everyone,

I have my FF2012 since September 2011 and I love the car. It has everything I want! But, last night I drove a Chevy Volt 2014 and let me say I was impressed! My commute to work is about 55 km = 34 miles (round trip) and it would be great to stop spending money on gas 3/4 of a year. The price + incentives of a full equipped Volt 2014 is almost the same to what I pay for my FF right now.
My "all time" mpg is at 28.2 and it is in the EPA norm. I have a garage so winter would not be a problem and as I understand from a friend who owns one, to not pay for gas for about 8 month out of 12, it would be great.
What do you think about this option ?

Doesn't the gas engine charge the battery if it gets low though? It's still a hell of a lot better on gas than a 2.0L in a Focus. But don't get the idea that I'm supporting his decision either. LOL

Thank you for your input.
25 miles = 40 km which in my case is not that bad -> to have to pay for 15 km of gas in winter time. And almost nothing when the temps are not bellow 0 C = 32 F. Of course, when Holidays come, I sure will pay something ! :)

There are people who are happy with their Volts, and there are people who are not. The big advantage of the Volt is that it's battery is nestled in the center of the car. It also has a very powerful electric motor- more powerful than any other PHEV. If you're interested in used or incentivized hybrids- you should take the time to drive all of them before you decide. People are who are only focused on fuel economy prefer the Prius, but it is most definitely an economy car- inside and out. My friend who has one doesn't like how loud it is on the highway. I own a Cmax SEL. I've never driven a Volt, so I don't know how it compares. I do recommend driving a Cmax- and seeing about getting a used SEL especially with the 303 package if you can find it. Typically a few of these cars end up on the lot 1 year old, and with less than 10k miles. If you can find one that is a CPO vehicle- you get a bumper to bumper warranty for 100k miles from the day you buy it. That coupled with Ford's standard factory 100k mile warranty on the hybrid powertrain is impressive alone. If you drive the car, take it on the highway. When the battery is at least 50% charged, floor it and pass someone. In spite of the reports, I routinely get 50 mpg in some trips in the CMax. Hybrids and PHEV vehicles get good fuel economy if you drive them. When someone uses one as a grocery getter- you won't get over 35 mpg. That's why so many people wanted to return them due to bad fuel economy. My wife doesn't do very well- she has an 8 mile daily drive cycle. Mine is more like 40. The CMax differs from the Prius in the best way to drive it to get good mileage. If you like the car, I'll tell you that you will get the best mileage by getting quickly up to speed and coasting instead of accelerating lethargically.

OH, one more thing, factor in the cost of a 240v charger with any PHEV except the Prius (it has a small battery). Also, take your time. You have a car. You can afford to look for all sorts of deals. I'd think you could find a good Volt 1 year used very cheap. I believe GM's CPO program is the same as Ford's.

Thank you for your great advices. I looked at the C-Max SEL as well, which is a great car too ! The problem is that if I deduct the incentives (8000$) I get a better price for the Volt. And given the fact that my day to day drive is no more than 34 miles, Volt looks a better choice for me. We have a program for the 240v charger with a discount of 50% or 1000$ at installation plus the 15% less for the insu rance which are also attractive. Again, I did not set my mind on a Volt yet, but it looks pretty damn nice.

Good article on the Volt, not focused on fuel economy. For someone like yourself, it is a good option. For long trips, it doesn't get supremo fuel economy, but it is on par with most cars of similar profile. You might want to spend some time playing with MyLink before you make a decision. It is not the same as MFT.
