Insurance in Ontario

Hey Guys,

I am an insurance agent and Ford lover so I thought I would invite anyone with insurance questions to ask away!

I know there are a lot of misconceptions and misunderstandings when it comes to insurance and I would love to help you all out if I can.

Have a great day and drive safe!

I have a question. So right now I am on my parent's policy and am listed as the full time driver of my Dad's 2005 Tacoma. My insurance company said that when I take my 2013 Focus off to college and be switched as a full time driver on that it will be an extra $400 a year. I find this odd because My Dad's truck is worth about $5,000 more than the focus . I was just wondering why there was such a big increase when my focus is worth less, has better safety features (Traction Control etc.) Kind've ridiculous if you ask me.

This guy will know a lot more about me but I know it is based off of many things including the statistics of how many accidents a certain vehicle model has been in and the average cost of repair I believe.

Benoit you are right, all cars are rated and the rating is based off many factors including accidents, safety of vehicle and repair costs. The main factor is accident benefits, a car cost very little to repair when compared to a human body so when considering insurance rates based on cars also consider what would happen if your dad's Tacoma hits your Ford at 80kmh? Who is at more risk of injury?

Does that help?

Yes it does, thank you! Just wish my family could find a good company that doesn't charge you out the wazoo for insurance, especially for young drivers.

Shop around! Where is your school and are living there? You could go out on your own and maybe find a cheaper price. How old are you?

Look around for school discounts, the school you are attending may have a company where you will get preferred rates.

I'm 18. Yes I'll be living there. It's in Lynchburg Virginia. I got some quotes based on where I live now and it was more than what I'm paying now. A Geico quote said $300 a month. When I go to school my rate will about $192 a month.

So it's cheaper when you are at school? 192 for an 18y ain't bad at all! That will be hard to beat, are you going to go with it? is the coverage good?

Right now I think it's about $158, when I go to school it will be $192 because I'm switching to my focus. This is all with my current insurance company. I guess it's better than some people's policy but it's still a lot of money to be dished out every month.

In Ontario, a young driver is around 250-500 depending on postal code so you are doing alright in my books. May be different around your neck of the woods.
