Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords Focus ST

Just got done reading article about one of the contributors cars in the magazine. He bought an ST for a DD and started modding it. SCT tune, from Unleashed Performance $599, cat down pipe delete $285. He's best run 13.45 @ 105mph on street tires. Clutch sounds like it could be weak link as the motor is over powering clutch with power shifting. So in order to save it he is just lifting to shift. He may be optimistic but thinks he can break into the 12s with slicks. They obviously have a lot of experiance in drag racing so who knows. So I'm going to keep following the progress on this car.

Sounds like a fun ride, but I'm still partial to a little more turbo lag and big top end over the minuscule turbos at high boost leaving you wanting for more as the RPM's climb.

Idk, that's just kind of boring to me. It's not like he doesn't realize a V6 Mustang would be cheaper and much faster...

I'd be more interested if the ST in question was modded for HPDE track days.

I should say, it's not that it isn't cool. Going faster is always cool, but it isn't always interesting.

Part of the reason he bought this car is it's his daily driver and has a rather long commute to work so gas mileage was a factor in the purchase.

How is that? V6 Mustangs get only 1mpg worse mileage than an ST. and hearing how thirsty they are in real world around here, that'd make me reconsider!

The 9.3:1 compression the ST has is not helping the fuel mileage.

For how thirsty they are reported to be I've been able to thrash the EPA city figure in town with careful driving getting closer to the highway mileage figure lately as the weather warms up.

With careful driving my lifetime average is closer to 28-29 mpg over 15000 miles now, but I've seen as high as 32.x in town and around the same on the few longer highway trips I've taken.

That is despite the low compression when off of boost.

Then he should have bought a Fiesta SFE... Fuel economy is a bullshit reason to buy a Focus ST, especially if the first thing he did was remove the cat and tune it.

They do mostly v8 Mustangs in this magazine so that would probably be a better comparison. Given the weight difference in this car could possibly beat the v6 Mustang and maybe have slight advantage in mpg. I don't know maybe the person wanted something different. Better handling?
