Impregnable Focus

A friend got sent to prison for four years and asked me to sell his 2000 Focus but I can't get into the car.

It's a two door hatch back with a manual transmission. He bought it after the body was straightened out. He's put a lot of parts in it but it's parked out of town at a private airport, the two side door handles are broken and the only keys he gave me won't open the trunk.

The doors handles pull open but don't act like they are attached to the latch mechanism. The door key unlocks the doors okay, I can see the lock knob go in and out but the doors don't open. The trunk key doesn't unlock the trunk, it's either the wrong key or ??? It doesn't turn the tumbler. I think the battery is dead, though I can't get into the car to pop the hood.

I'm thinking I'm going to have to pop the windshield out to crawl in. Any other ideas? Is there a way to jimmy the trunk open?

Thanks,
Impregnable

Here's an answer that works for a similar question:

Ford only uses 1 key for their cars so I don't understand why you have a "trunk key" for it, like on a GM car.

Your buddy has to sign the title in front of a Notary, or he has to sign a Power of Attorney form for someone else to sign for him, but that also has to be done in front of a Notary.

I would worry about getting that part worked out before I bothered with the car.

This just sounds all sorts of fishy ...

Well, it won't go anywhere without a tow truck without the right coded keys...

Thanks

I got into the car yesterday. Thanks to all for your suggestions.

Quick answer was the key. As some surmised, the two keys are identical except for size of the 'handle'. When I noticed that, I went back and tried it again using it in a quick bump key up-and-down motion and it finally opened the trunk.

Yep, I do have the notarized forms I need to sell the car. We did that before he got sent up. He's a smart guy, just went off his meds, damn Prozac.

After an hour I gave up on the coat hanger idea, coming in through the top of the window just wasn't going to open the inside handle far enough to disengage the door mechanism.

Got the battery out and have it on a charger to see if it will come back to life. We are on our way.

Thanks again for your help,
