Keep the air filter on and you'll be fine. Just make sure the filter doesn't bounce off since there's only half the airbox holding it in with the top off.

Intake

I'd advise having an K&N or Green Filter on there if you're going try that

Not advisable. You are now pulling warm air from under the hood into your intake which blunts power and decreases hp. If you like the sound, do the snorkel delete. You will still have a change in intake noise and you have the potential of increasing your power by up to 8 hp. if you combine the snorkel delete with a K&N filter. Read this thread by dyn085. Duane knows his stuff.

Either way your just going to pull bad air into the engine. I already played the "cheap" way and I promise it doesn't cut it.

The snorkel delete should not pull bad air into the intake. It simply makes the MK3 intake system shorter (with less restriction) but still pulls outside cooler air like the the ST air inlet.

I've done the snake oil, I mean snorkel delete. but you're exposing an unsealed box to a flaming hot engine bay, to each their own but I would recommend a proper intake setup for the coldest intake temps. I had the Steeda but it still wasn't cutting it. so I cut it. literally and did the new mission mod. which made me wish I saved 300 dollars and just did that to my factory box with a drop in filter.

You are entirely correct. By removing the snorkel you are still pulling air from outside of the engine bay on the other side of the radiator. Some people don't understand a lot about automotive mechanics and having the pictures should help them to understand. In my opinion it's much better than having a stream of air blown perpendicularly across the MAF sensor, but I'm just an aircraft mechanic.

OP, keep the lid on.
