New Ford Focus RS Possibility In Jeopardy

With the new Ford Focus ST capturing the heart’s of hot hatch enthusiasts stateside, fans have been clambering for an even hotter variant. Like the Europe-only RS line, customers were hoping for a chance to have an American-bound version of their own. But that may never happen.

Sitting down with Ford’s European chief Stephen Odell recently, Autocar found out that “There’s nothing to talk about,” regarding a new RS. “It’s great that we have a proud past with RS, and it’s clear it has acted as a halo product and a way of linking to our racing programs, but for now there is nothing to say,” continued Odell.

This is surprising news considering a near confirmation back in February, with spy shots of the RS testing. But, reports say that a 330-horsepower RS could interfere with the new Mustang and its sales formula.

That being said, a Ford Focus RS slotted above the Focus and Fiesta ST does sound extremely enticing. We’ll just have to wait and see how this one pans out…

If they want to link to racing, they'll make a Fiesta RS.

It unfortunately makes sense. Why would they build a $35,000+ front wheel drive hatch back when you can buy an iconic RWD, muscle/sports car for $25 - 27,0000 with the same 2.3L engine in it. The RS badge has a racing history, but not as long as the Mustang.
I am going to grab a handful of coins, find a fountain and wish for a future Focus RS

Not in this country...

I can just see the Mustang fanatics decrying the existence of the Focus RS once kill-videos were to pop up and folks were losing stoplight sparring to a Focus!

Yea, I get all the above, but come on ford, do this rs foci. Yea, IK the mustang is 50 yrs old now. Time to look forward, why not both? There are always going to be people that don't want a mustang but want a full on performance car, like a sti or similar.

So does that mean the RS wagon is out too?

I would expect that a 2015 Mustang GT (5.0) would absolutely smoke the (hypothetical) 330HP FWD RS in a straight line.

In any case, what kind of moron would buy a RS for any kind of straight line racing?

Doesn't surprise me as I said all along we weren't going to get one here in America and probably never will. I figured cost would be the bigger hurdle but the Mustang sales strategy makes sense with this new engine being introduced.

The new Mustang would probably do quite well on the track as well. Even the current SRA mustangs are doing fairly well.

I'm not sure the market for a FWD hot hatch priced higher than the ST is big enough in the states. Not enough roads around here to take advantage of its handling, and there are plenty of other vehicles around here that make as much or more power - often for less money. If it had AWD it could probably compete with the STI/Evo, but it probably would stay FWD. For those looking for a track vehicle, there are better options available.

At the end of the day I just don't see it as a vehicle many folks could actually have fun with. With the money you'd spend on it you could probably buy a Mustang GT, WRX STI or Evo. Hell, I'm pretty sure the Boss 302 is right around $40,000 - not much difference then what an RS would likely cost. The Boss has performed VERY well on road courses. Plus, with all those you either get more practicality (AWD), or more fun (RWD).
