Aside from the defective valve seats, these are pretty reliable engines. The most common issue is timing belt, which should be changed around 100K/8 years, so it doesn't leave you stranded, usually at a bad time......
The valve seat issue can give a warning, though often it doesn't. A misfire code that isn't cured by plugs/wires, could be caused by a loose valve seat, or possibly a sticking valve. Either of these requires head removal to fix.

I wish I had the money to just put a heads only head on it ASAP. Even if I did I wouldn't have anywhere to do it. And even if I did I wouldn't have a car until I got it done. And even if I did I wouldn't have the time to do it lol. If I can get 130k out of it I would be happy. I take really good care of my cars

He's GOT a good one now, just worried after seeing all the warnings.

Drive it & don't worry too much, price was right & you may never have an issue while you own it.

I got mine cheap (2000 Sedan, 115K) with a missing head and manifolds etc. It turned out to also have a broken #1 piston so it is a good thing I pulled the block and had it on an engine stand. At that point it made sense to go all out, lightly hone the cylinders, new std pistons and rings, new crank seals, new timing belt and idler pulley, new water pump.
I recommend a new head casting from a machinist for about $350. Plus a new head gasket and valves as needed. Do all this and maintain it well and it'll give you years of pleasure. Sure you can take the risk and keep driving, but it could drop a seat at any time. You can't dare take long trips with it, locally would be OK but you never know!
Rebuild it yourself as a project and you will learn a lot, as much as a lot of expensive schooling! Good Luck, Bob Scates Springfield, VA

The guy's got 45 THOUSAND miles to go before the mileage when yours broke, I'm not rebuilding my Duratec just because a few with more than twice the mileage have had rod bearings give up. Some go over 200,000 without an issue of each type.

Something else could break first, unless it's a high mileage SPI and you have time/$ to do the head as a preventive it's not worth worrying TOO much about it.

On my 97 Escort, I went about 150k miles when I finally sold the car and it STILL never had the issue. Maybe it was luck? or maybe it was my 20k miles OCI oil changes with M1 that held it together? I dunno, but I'm sure glad I don't have that thing in my life anymore!

worst car ive ever owned

Ive never had in my life a miserable car that constantly needed work and rebuilds..it should be put to rest and laid out to pasture, never buying a ford again because of this.
