LOL - ALL 4 rods break? you'll have to expand on that one, completely stock right?

Don't be so dramatic, scare tactics aren't needed.

All banter back and forth aside, I posted MY experience with the "canned" SCT tune. My settings are for my vehicle, and it runs great. I didn't simply pick these settings and then drive the vehicle, I spent 3-4 hours adjusting them until MY car felt right.

The main thing here is to remember that every vehicle is different, SCT only allows a certain amount of modification so that it is safe and it's ok to run

My Vehicle responded positively with the modifications and settings I listed above, sales pitches aside it's very good for a so-called "canned" tune.

You were offered a way see what was happening and to learn something and chose not to , there was NO sales pitch until you asked

" SCT only allows a certain amount of modification so that it is safe and it's ok to run " This statement couldnt be further from the truth

Tom

All you can say is not to do what I did, yet my Focus runs great and you STILL continue.

From SCT's FAQ - What is the difference between a Custom Tune and SCT's Pre-Loaded Tunes?

"SCT Pre-Loaded Tunes are designed for stock or lightly modified vehicles (cold air kits, exhaust systems, gear ratio changes etc.)

Custom Tunes are created by one of SCT's custom tuning dealers worldwide and are specifically designed for your vehicle and its modifications. SCT's Custom Tuning dealers have complete control over your vehicles PCM using SCT's Advantage III Custom Tuning software and will optimize your vehicles performance for simple add-ons such as cold air kits or for high horsepower modifications such as superchargers, turbo kits or nitrous oxide."

So yes.. I'd say they are safe, If I want to take my vehicle to the "Next Level" I can do so with a custom tune but there's NOTHING wrong with what I've done nor will it hurt my vehicle.

Is an SCT base tune as good as an FSWERKS / TOM'S TUNE? NO

However stating that the base SCT tune can damage my vehicle without a datalog is just mere speculation and hyperbole.

I never said that the base SCT tune can damage your engine , I stated NOT to be adjusting the parameters for fuel and timing with or with out a base tune that is NOT safe for your engine

Enjoy your tune

Troy.

So then add max spark and remove the most fuel you can.

Now what do you think will happen?

Just try it once. If SCT's device won't allow the car to FUBAR, nothing will go wrong.

And I think everyone who's done any tuning has tried to beat this into everyone's heads,
Do Not tune without a Wideband

Far as what changes in the SCT tunes vs stock zetec (in order of Octane 87, 91, 93, race gas),

ztecpower - You're right, no-one knows how "safe" you are without data, not sure you have enough yourself.

And I suppose we're all worrywarts, come with the territory after seeing things go wrong in the past.

Only one point to add - remember that the MOST power comes at the edge of disaster - even when adjusting idle mix with a screw on a carb you back off to the rich side after finding the highest rpm setting.

Thanks for your comments guys,

With the SCT provided tune there is a MAXIMUM of 2+ deg advance / -14 deg retard, and a MAXIMUM of 6% (+-) fuel trim adjustment.

After reviewing the tune again last night before my trip home from work I've actually got it set at -4% fuel and +1 deg. timing from 2000-8000 RPM on the tuner, however my shift points don't go over 6200 RPM (This is an automatic trans) so there REALLY isn't a worry.

My point is that just because I did the settings on my own with my own methods doesn't mean that I'm wrong. I could understand if my car was pinging, detonating or misfiring the need for concern and I appreciate it.

However I don't appreciate being treated like I have absolutely no Idea what I'm doing, I've owned 3 of these vehicles and have torn them down to the uni-body. I may not have as much experience as Tom (2000-current) with tuning the focus (I don't own a shop) but I understand how an engine works, I believe it is in Tom's best interest to comment on threads like mine so as to tell anyone that messes with their ECU tune that it will cause engine damage. God forbid people actually tinker with their own vehicle! "YOU SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT MY TUNE!!"

Insinuating that the SCT canned tune can cause catastrophic engine failure is just hilarious! If you're messing with timing and fuel then you do have to know what works and what doesn't, I have an understanding of both.

What I did worked for my vehicle and it does not detonate or ping, I plan on getting an actual tune for the car but this works for now.

Troy.
