Tuning 2000 zetec with stock cams with adjustable cam gears

Have any of you guys dealt with running stock cams and tuning using cam gears? Any luck? Wanted to try it before spending all the extra money on cams and such. I'm currently using a 93 octane base tune provided from CFM.

Best I could manage on stock cams was about 135whp.
If that's all the power you want, adjustable cam gears can help (in conjunction with other modifications).
If you want more power, buy cams.

I've already got full 4-1 race header so no cat, 2.25 inch cat back system, CAI, 65mm TB. I'm not wanting to pull the head of my car just yet. Comp Cams makes a drop in set but a fellow car builder friend told me to go with cam gears and see how it'll do.

Well, cam gears aren't going to add power that you couldn't add without them. It just makes things easier.

What kind of power do you want to make?
Anything over the ~130whp mark, you'll need cams. It doesn't matter what bolt-on's you add. That is about the limit W/O them.

I don't know what power I'm putting down now compared to what I want. Just trying to figure out how far to go before I'm happy

Well, with out a goal, you're just pissing in the wind. Just ask anyone who first built a N/A engine and then went turbo, because power is addictive. Even those with boost want more power.

You'll save money by setting a goal and not buying parts that won't compliment that goal.

You wont see 200 NA on 93 fuel about mid 160`s yes , you need to change to a SVT header that alone will gain you 5-6 HP then like stated I would add the Comp stg 3 cams , TB , 2.5 to 3 inch Exh
If you dont have a tune now you need one that will help you now with the mods you have

I had stock cams with adj. cam gears dyno tuned. Was one of the best mods but like mentioned above it still was not enough and I ended up throwing some cams in as well though they weren't dyno tuned. If you get adj cam gears get them dyno tuned it will be well worth it, though I'd wait and throw bigger cams in at the same time.

I also had a 4-2-1 header and I switched to the SVT header, it made it sound better and gave a little more pep, though I had to add fuel on top of the tune I already have. With the stock tune and my mods the car would run like poop till 3k rpm then haul, now I pull from idle on up and gained a crap ton of low end tq, I highly recommend a tune to go with your mods, specifically if you get the SVT header as it will lean it out. Now I'm going F/I like most hp addicts. You think you'll be happy with a little more power and while you can convince yourself you are, eventually you'll realize you were just lying to your self and you'll crave for more power.

so your saying that the header i bought from CFM won't help me produce as much power than the svt header? I didn't know I could run 3 in exhaust.
