Lightbulb K&N 9285 open end noise

I installed the K&N E9285 in my 2013 SE with the end cap off and found it to be very noisy. It actually sounded like I had removed part off the exhaust!

Some people might like that sound, but I found it a bit annoying. Not wanting to lose the benefit of the extra airflow, I removed the resonator that sits below the air box.

The sound now is just prefect, it's not as quiet as the stock filter, but at low revs is quiet enough, and lowder at higher rpms.

I also think that going with this filter and no resonator makes the snorkel delete unnecessary as now you have a big hole in the bottom of the box to allow more cool air to reach the filter.

Yeah but getting rid of the snorkel opens up the air flow from the front of the car which is where the air is coming in from when the car is in motion. Basically you will get all that air pushed into the air box from the front. Unless you do the newmission mod then you probably arent going to get much air from the bottom because there is no air being pushed in from there.

Well.. actually you want smooth air. Not turbulent air.
So the holes the op has may be fine for his needs. Just 'pushing in air' is not a solution if the air id=s turbulent.
That is why i say do nto take off the air dam in front of where the snorkel was. As then the air is VERY turbulent and it does no good. Just taking off the restrictive snorkle is best. then the space in front of it is calm air.
(though yes some air is pushed into the space. but in a smoother pattern.)
For the op taking off that bottom tube will allow air to enter from that area. Whether it is good or not? I do not know.
This entire post by me is mainly to comment on the sort of 'any air is good as long as it is shoved at the entrance' is not true.

Even turbulent air, once it passes through the filter is not going to be nearly as turbulent anymore.

The turbulence creates a problem. if you are not worried about it, then don't worry.
If you want me to 'prove it' with a hundred pages if charts graphs and dyno testing I guess I would just laugh.
Since that would STILL not be enough for some of our esteemed members.

I guess i'm confused then. I thought the whole point of the snorkel delete was so that air can more easily be pushed into the filter housing since it wouldnt have to go through the snorkel? I thought taking the piece of the bottom was only good to accomplish more noise unless you did the newmission mod.

The snorkel is at a right angle and has numerous holes in it to allow for NVH reduction, this is it's primary function.

Removing the snorkel allows for a more direct path, although the ST stock does not have this air flow restriction and instead only has a short velocity stack to aid laminar air flow entry into the air box, which can be replaced with a longer intake snorkel which directly funnels the high pressure air at the grille into the air box and is required if you wish to run the Ford Racing Tune and cold spark plugs.

Sorry i'm a nub, what does NVH mean? could you give your opinion on if removing the piece from the bottom of the filter helps or not? If it will have a benifit to the air flow then i'll remove it. I was just under the impression it didnt do anything unless you did the newmission mod too.

NVH = Noise Vibration and Harshness.

The resonator underneath the air box is meant to also help reduce noise vibration and harshness as well as protect the mass air flow sensor from turbulence.

Unless you ducted air to where the resonator lies it would likely not get cooler air necessarily, plus there isn't much of a benefit.
