stage 1 cams

Thinking of putting cams in my 07 St. Does anyone know what kind of horsepower gains I could expect and how they effect fuel mileage. Other mods are cai, exhaust, sct tunner. Thanks

You'll see a major gain in performance. I don't have them myself but I know a lot of people who do and got results. Make sure you retune your car afterwards.

You'll see a noticable difference. Compare the oem lobes to cranes stage 1 is like 32A & 34C boobies. I have the crane stage 1's & are great for a DD. Fairley easy to install too. Another great cheap mod is to do a BSD plug.

Thanks, I'd definitely re-tune. Does anyone know how much it effects fuel mileage. It is my dd and don't want to kill my MPG all together.

That depends on your right foot lol. But no, it should not have a negative effect on your MPG, if anything I don't see why it wouldn't be helped (someone correct me if I am wrong). Btw what brand stage 1 cams are you getting? I am planning to do this after my header.

They do help mpg blowing down the freeway. I can get mid 30's.

Generalization on cams:

All aftermarket performance cams have increased duration, the valves are open longer. This improves performance at middle-upper RPMS, and negatively effects low RPM efficiency.

Depending on how much duration, when the intake valve closes, and how much intake/exhaust valve overlap, bigger cams can be outright pigs at low RPM's with such terrible inefficiency that the engine will barely idle and pull very little manifold vacuum. Bigger cams are not always better, it really is a fine tuning tool based on ALL the other factors of the combination.

The cam in my big block chevelle only makes 5" vacuum at 1000 rpm idle, and is pretty inefficient below 3000 rpm. Fortunately that engine is over 8 liters displacement, so it has some low rpm torque to spare, but wouldn't work worth a crap without a 3000+ converter.

^^^ Good description.

There aren't any changes possible that don't have a negative to balance against any positive.

When the positive gives you something you want more than the negative detracts - it's a good change for you personally.

I personally think going stage 2 would be better. I just read a few post about another member not being happy with his stage 1's and tune.

If I was to do it over, I would of went w/ the crane 0012's, but, I'm happy w/ the 0010's.
