His comments directly refer to trucks and not cars. In many full-size trucks first gear is basically used for towing, large-grade starting, and getting heavy weight moving. I was always taught to start moving in second when the vehicle was empty, which basically results in the same take-off as in a car. But, like he said, if you start in first you don't need to touch the accelerator due to the gearing and torque.

Edit: I missed the small cars in quotes. For that I have no idea. I've never had a car that didn't require at least a small amount of slipping to get started.

Maybe they changed it for 2014, because that's how mine is, and I love it that way, too! (Totally the opposite of my old car, which has always been tricky to get right.)

Don't get me wrong, its good, but I find that my engagement point is roughly halfway through the pedal travel

Mine starts just off the floor and is done by around halfway up. Brand new, though, so that may change.

This is my first manual I've ever had, so it's hard for me to compare. However, I felt like it was pretty easy to master after the first week and I do agree with most people saying that the third gear is quite nice, although sometimes dropping it down that far to pass is a little much. At the same time passing in 5th is frustrating. I am anxious to see how a tune will affect power and feel of the car. Can anyone with a 5 speed and tune say how its affected their car?

There's a whole thread dedicated to the topic in the Mk3 tuning section. That's the best place to start for information.

With the tune and the raised rpm limiter I can hit 95 in 3rd, I never use 5th gear for passing its just to slow. Fourth gear is ok unless your in a hurry.

What?! My 2014 has barely 500 miles on it and there is SO much pedal travel, it drives me nuts. Is this adjustable in any way? I'm so used to driving cars with little pedal travel and this car engages when your foot is almost completely lifted

If it was adjustable, I'd be in heaven. I second everything she said!
