To me, the 5 speed is great but needs a 6th gear to drop the RPMs as an overdrive on the highway. I drove a Golf TDI with a 6 speed...first time in a 6 speed...it was weird having to downshift on the highway to pass folks but it would be worth it to me for the increased mpgs. This transmission has apparently been around since the early '90s....it's 2014 and gas costs over $3...game for a 6th gear.

i do agree with this comment 100%
but i wouldn't add a 6 gear to get closer gear ratio, but rather as an overdrive

that being said comparing the focus 5spd to other companies 5 spd,
imo it's the best gearing i have seen matched to a 4 cyl power

Mk3 with 93 octane is closer to that number then you think. I got a 7.4 out of my stock focus. Once it warms up i will try again with the mod in my sig and full st exhaust if it ever warms up so i can get it installed. I am hoping for 7.0
edit: btw that 185 is crank hp not to the wheels. Mk3 with the mods u listed is around that hp to the wheels which is 200+ crank hp.

I second that get a tune. Even if you only use 10 percent drive loss I would be at 193 crank hp with 176 at the wheels. 15 percent gives over 200. Pretty good for na car. Just doit.

Who was that? It really depends on the ratio of that 6th gear.

Well put! The manual needs a 6th gear for added MPG on the hwy but other than that Ford got the ratios right.

I do not recall. It was shortly after I joined the forum almost three years ago.

Good point, i didint think about that. The OP pointed out earlier that he had read a bunch of dyno numbers too and apparently the 2.5 mazda stock wheel HP is pretty much the same as the stock Focus wheel HP which is pretty cool considering it claims to haev 25 more crank HP stock then the focus.
