overall i just feel that ford did an excellent job with the gearing on the focus

if any of you are coming from or have had experience with other 4 cylinder 5 speed you'll know what i mean , well at least in the case of ( celica, integra, civic, mazda 3 5 spd)
I agree ford did a great job with this transmission and gearing. This car should have an advantage on the highway against other cars in its class due to the gearing. I remember when I used to have a 07 specv and raced my friends cobalt ss I would always pull him from a stop but from any type of a roll he would get me due to having longer gears, esp in 3rd where he could go way faster then my nissan which topped out 3rd at 85.

this is exactly what i mean, most usable 3rd gear :D
i seen a lot of complaining about the 5 spd in this forum, a lot of people asking for a 6spd, with little to no love for the 5spd, which has been my favorite part of this car lol

i know this car is completely off topic
but my friend just recently got a 2013 bmw 328i xdrive,
car only has 241 hp and 255 ft/q yet pulls 0-60 around 5.2-5.5s!!!!
keep in mind it does have AWD and 7 speed dual clutch tranny
that is by far the quickest sub 300hp car i have ever been in!

considering subaru wrx sti awd 305hp\290ftq car goes 0-50 in about 5.3

this just goes to show, how much a transmission can impact performance/acceleration

I bet that bmw has short gears that is why it gets up and goes so fast :)

yes the gears 2-5 are incredibly short! ( it was something like only 1500 rpm drops per shift)

i understand your point of view, but just because a car has a 6 speed , doesn't necessarily mean that it's closer ratio gearing, in a lot of car's, the 6th gear is used more so as an overdrive/econo gear. the Toyota Celica GTS 6 speed is an example of this, the 6th gear was useless unless being used for economy reasons

on most cars that i have seen 6th gear useful (as far as performance goes) were pure sports cars. i personally find 6 spd transmission useless on sub 200 hp compact cars

like i said earlier, just compare mazda3 2.5 ( mazda uses close ratio, just like you want :P to our focus's 2.0 its nearly 1 second slower in 0-60mph acceleration , (and the reason i use 0-60, is because thats where 90% of our real world acceleration is done, which is what matters to me)

sure we could go 7,8,9 speed

but pause for a moment and think how annoying it would be shifting all the time with a manual with that many gears, unless you don't mind going automatic :P... i sure don't want to drive auto

but what we have here with our focus is a Reliable, excellent, well balanced 5spd transmission, one of the best 5spd i have ever had the pleasure to drive :)

focus 2.0L 0-60 7.0-7.2 with a 5 spd (160hp/148ft/q)
where did you get those numbers? from what i read the focus with the 2.0 160HP does 0-60 in 7.6 and the mazda 3 using the 2.0 skyactive 155 HP does it in 7.2. So the less powerful mazada engine was actually faster, so you would think that if the mazda was equiped with the more powerful 2.5 it would be even faster still? I would be interested to read the article you found those numbers. I was reading on caranddriver.com info.

i forgot exactly where i found the article, but your the first to ever mention mazda3 skyactiv does 7.2, from what i read on there forums, most go roughly in the 8's
everywhere i read the 2.5 does roughly 7.8s

heres a site, comparing both cars, both automatics, to give some perspective

focus 7.6s AUTO
http://www.motorweek.org/reviews/roa...010_ford_focus

Mazda3 2.0 skyactive 8.9s AUTO
http://www.motorweek.org/reviews/roa...azda3_skyactiv

the car and driver article you looked at was for the auto

here's the manual one

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...ad-test-review

ford focus 7.3sec, hmmm maybe it's 7.3 and not 7.1 .. it's posted somewheres on this forum, i'm sure someone will correct me

when comparing 2 cars, try to compare from the same site,
as altitude/temp can have a drastic effect on acceleration test,

1-2 second's difference in some cases

i test drove both back to back, nearly bought the 2.5

i can say this, the focus is definitely faster then the skyactiv 155hp motor,
comparing the 2.5 to focus, i have the say the mazda, you could definitely feel the extra torque off the line, but the focus seems to pull strong 4000rpm and up

the mazda3 used for that test for the link you gave me
http://www.caranddriver.com/mazda/mazda-3
was 2014 skyactiv 2.5 which has 185hp, explains the 7.2 plus it's the auto, the manual tranny goes roughly 6.6-6.8s.... which is on par with most 180hp+ compact cars

i was comparing it to the older 2.5 167hp/168ftq
