Yeah I understand that. 4th doesn't give you enough power while passing though?

it probably would in some situations, i should give it a test
but i do find myself in a lot of situation, where i don't have a lot of time to pass , maybe 6-7 second's tops , 4th gear would be a little risky.

using the 3rd gear for passing, gets me in and out of the opposite lane fast enough so that i don't have to worry about the oncoming traffic, and without scaring opposite traffic lol.

in most situation i'm in a 60mph zone cruising around 60-65 mph , and i'll find myself stuck behind a car going 50-55 mph, this is where i get the most use of the 3rd gear

""My main point of the thread, was to point out how usable i find our transmission, especially 3rd gear, in comparison to my previous 2 5spd car (toyota celica, and Acura integra) which the 3rd gear was almost useless (very short 3rd gear) i rarely if ever used it, unless i was only doing straight line acceleration to get on a freeway.""

Back on topic, I will agree that the mk3 Focus 5spd is one of the best I've ever driven. I wish my 2011 was half as good!

and to add the 6 spd tranny would be faster comment... consider this....

mazda 3 2.5l 0-60 7.8-7.9 with a 6 spd ( 167hp/168ft/q)
focus 2.0L 0-60 7.0-7.2 with a 5 spd (160hp/148ft/q)

that is only up to 60, i am sure mazda has a shift in there where focus does not and can top of 60 in 2nd. up to 100 I would say mazda might be faster assuming our mk3's were not under rated :D

In most situations I downshift to 4th from 5th. I have never really had to go to third. Mavic what mods, if any, do you have? On the freeway I typically do 70 so I can pass just by flooring it in 5th. On twisty narrow roads I may put it into 4th to pass, only third if I am following someone slow. Agree though that the 5 sp has good ratios.

but the argument was that if focus had 6 gears and if the first 5 gears was a bit shorter overall focus might be a bit faster because it can get into powerband faster. does that make more sense now?

plus in op's case shorter gear in his focus would make it easier to pass by downshifting to 4th instead of 3rd.

well then i suppose a better way to measure speed would be 1/4 mile

the focus and mazda 3 2.5 stock have almost identical 1/4 miles of 15.8-16.2
always have to factor in, tires, altitude, temp etc

seems that the focus does better times in the 0-60 mph range,
and the mazda 3 60-90 mph range

My car's only mod is snorkel delete & k&N drop in (to answer project commuter's question)

the only reason i drop it into 3rd gear, the highway commute frequently has heavy traffic, and 3rd gear drop provides the best passing acceleration

here's the situation:

so if i get stuck behind someone going 50-55 mph (60 mph zone), which happens a lot on this highway, i'll drop it in 3rd, which sets the RPM around 4-4.5k rpm mark (when comparing to my old celica and integra, i would be in the mid 5.5k rpm range) also note that all 3 cars have nearly identical redlines (give or take a few 100 rpm's)

now if i'm passing someone and oncoming traffic is far away, i'll drop it into 4th

if i'm on a 4 lane freeway, i'll just keep it in 5th to pass

it's the tallest 3rd gear, i have personally driven on a 4 cyl 5spd vehical (celica, integra, civic, mazda3) which imo makes it much more usable (keep in mind i'm not comparing it to 6 speeds)

overall i just feel that ford did an excellent job with the gearing on the focus

if any of you are coming from or have had experience with other 4 cylinder 5 speed you'll know what i mean , well at least in the case of ( celica, integra, civic, mazda 3 5 spd)
