clutch chocies?

I have a stock clutch with about 135xxx miles on it I understand that I could last to 200, 250 or300k miles but my question is that I have a trans I am going to rebuild to new so why I was in the I want to upgrade my clutch to something stronger as well. My goal with the car is to have a great DD and a good performance car on the weekends. It is NA right now with svt header and other bolt ons I am planning on doing some autox and other things like that and when funds come around I would like to go FI maybe to the 200hp/tq area. With that in mind is it worth it to get a light weight fly wheel with all the hardware and then a stage 1,2,or 3 clutch for the longevity and comfortably to hold the power I have and want also what are some of the pros and cons of all combinations?

Stage 2 would be fine. A light weight flywheel will let the engine rev quicker. I have a used spec-stage 2 pressure plate,disc and ford racing light weight flywheel in excellent condition. If interested pm me.

fidanza 8.5lb aluminum flywheel and an oem replacement exedy clutch. i ran that combo for at least 60,000+ miles, abused the crap out of it, ran a 125 shot of nitrous on it on a number of occasions which should have put the torque over 200ft/lbs and when i replaced it with a clutch that would hold 400ft/lbs for my turbo build recently it still looks like it has another 50k of life left at least. get that clutch and flywheel combo and you wont regret it until you decide you want more power and you have to replace the clutch. and even then you will only regret it because you will realize how much more use you could have had out of it when you pull the old exedy out. it will blow your mind how quickly the engine revs with that lightweight flywheel too. might want to look into a limited slip differential too. i know you arent making enough power to think you need it but that was my favorite mod for 5 years while i was running N/A and its a HUGE asset to autox and road racing in general. no more one wheel wonder burnouts when you try to lay on the throttle to power out of a sharp turn.

sooo the pros to this combo... long life, it will hold the power you want, very driveable on a daily basis, takes one hell of a beating, and isnt terribly expensive.

for the life of me i cant think of any cons except for the fact they dont hold 600ft/lbs tq at the wheels. and im still using the fidanza lightweight flywheel on my current turbo build btw

The main thing with an aluminum flywheel is it can be reused as focusmaniaczx3 noted later with a different stage clutch if needed in the future.

The stage clutch I would recommend for a turbo would be different than what I would recommend for an NA setup.

I would also recommend looking at a Spec stage 2 as forddorf noted. This will allow for better flexibility down the road when you want more power.

but the issue with the spec2 is that it doesnt have quite the life span. granted i dont have PERSONAL experience with this clutch but i have noted a number of people saying they only get 30-50k miles out of them before they need replacing. there is alot to consider. how long are you going to drive the car n/a, how much power do you want to run, are you going to eventually want more, etc etc... if you are going turbo within a year then the spec2 would probably fit the bill pretty nice especially if you want to max out the stock motor on boost which would give around between 220-250whp/tq. but if you are going to stick with the 200 range i still think the exedy would work best for you

a basic rule of thumb is that the more aggressive the clutch you put in a car the fewer miles its going to last for. there is a little leeway with some clutches but generally speaking thats how it is. mine is rated at 400ft/lbs and i doubt it will last longer than 15-20k

clutch

I have the Exeedy oem clutch with SVT header, bolt ons, tune, ect. It seems to be a great clutch for the money but I have had it slip a couple times on very hard accelerations from 1st.

I am about to try a CenterForce Dual Friction Clutch. It seems like a really nice clutch for drivabilty and is suppose to hold 250 HP at the minimum. I found it on some website for liek 220 i think. Dirt cheap. might want to look into that unless your thinking of going turbo crazy 400 HO power

I will let ya know how I like it after a month or so. should be putting down about 250HP on it.

life lesson here never buy just one spec clutch because it will not last long save yourself the headache and buy a clutch masters set up or some other brand

Both sleepyboy and I run CenterForce dual friction clutches.

It is an outstanding clutch period. Excellent OEM feel to them and they clamp like a MoFo.

I use a LuK slave cylinder as well.

From my experience, I'd say 160ft/lb. Or maybe 150.

I'm on a stock Sach's replacement. Specifically, SACHS Part # K7012402.
After break in, the only slip I had was shifting to 4th on the track with a hot disc.
Other than that I have no complaints.

I'm also on a lightweight flywheel, 12# IIRC.

Even though it holds, I just don't feel comfortable with it and will go to something bigger this year. But I only want a heavier pressure plate. I like the organic disc and the fact I can easily slip it at I need.

Lightweight and stage 2 would be a good option for growth.

- Basically, the pressure plate determines TQ holding capacity.
- Disc material determines how hard the initial bite is.
- A 'sprung hub' mitigates chatter.
