Nope, Monday night. This is the only issue in what 2 months of ownership. Not bad at all for 650.

That's a better track record than most new cars

Oh man do I ever know the feeling. I work in a factory and it's like we can't have a life. I'm 2nd shift too, and since I stay up until the early morning (to take my girl to work) it isn't like I can force myself awake at 9am after 2 hours of sleep to work on the car.

The good news is a few weeks ago they started giving us an optional day off every weekend.

Sooo I discovered why I didn't have tail lights and it kinda my fault.. by default.

So sunday after noon I went out and cleaned up the interior (dash and center console). While doing so I found a switch on top of the steering column for some reason I never noticed before. It had a symbol on it that looked like a parking lamp. I flipped it on and off a couple times nothing happened I forgot about it.

I had intended to look it up online but I forgot. Well I scheduled time in my inlaws garage to work on it today, while I was sitting in the car waiting for the car to warm up I looked it up. Subaru put it there so that your tail lights stay on when the car is off i guess if you would find your self off the road or something. Your suppose to turn the car on then flip the switch on.

Apparently if you mess with it, with the car off, it puts the lights out of sequence and they dont work at all. I started the car flipped the switch and sure enough lights, i flipped it back off now they work normally. I tried several times. Everything works fine now.

I also am looking into getting a custom toggle switch made for this switch. FWD or AWD switch.

haha you found the Subaru switch of doom! That was one of the quirky things they did back in the day. Because the lights were switched on and off with the ignition, there had to be an override somewhere if you wanted to switch on your marker lights without having to start the vehicle. But there wasn't a really good spot for the switch, so hey let's put it on top of the steering column!

Needless to say this caused all sorts of issues. Back in the 90s, early online forums were filled with "why won't my parking lights turn off?" posts. I can only imagine the volume of calls that Subaru dealerships received back then.

I can say that the behavior of your lights is non standard though. That switch should only allow the lights to function when the car is off, and shouldn't have any bearing on whether or not your car was started or not when the switch was first flipped. Given the modifications that were done to it, I'm going to assume that the wiring was either damaged or altered in some way.

But either way, it's best to avoid using that switch altogether as even experienced Subaru owners have been known to forget that it is there and wonder for a few minutes why the lights are still on. Some people even taped the switch down or disabled it completely.

Now if I found one that was manual. Oh god. I would work 60 hrs a week for that thing. Something draws me to old cars you never see. The mit. 3000gt is another one I would love.

Yes. I plan to later on, hunt down another in manual, in much better shape. A 2.5RS would be great.
