A couple posts back I mentioned that the turning radius is crappy and it fights sharp turns. Common problem being trans going bad or CV axle.

I finally found out that the previous owner hotwired the duty-c and locked center diff. Meaning all for wheels are locked at all times. Which is amazing traction in the snow, in fact you have to really try hard to get it to kick around even in 4 or 5 inches.

But shitty in the turns on dry pavement, he did wire it to a switch so I can disengage it, but it actually disengages the rear all together and makes the car FWD. Which automatically makes it handle much much better.

Hotwiring the center diff is a common mod. But I should be able to switch from locked to limited slip. So I'm going to need to figure out how its wired and redo that before it causes damage from driving it locked at all times. Although I do like it.

Full Lockers!

Snow Machine!

Can't remember my Subaru History. I can remember them switching to all cars having full time 4WD from front to 4 switchable, just not WHEN. 'Course they once sold front wheel drive only - that's a while ago...

Nice pics. That Subie has had a hard life but keeps on kicking. Is that an EJ18 or EJ22?

The 4EAT isn't bad, but sometimes loses reverse. It went out on my '95 BK Leggy, but I continued to drive it while practicing creative parking. Then I sold it to a friend for $800, and he drove it for two more years without reverse.

It's been a while, but IIRC, swapping a 5 speed isn't a terrible procedure provided you have all the donor parts on hand. Overall, these cars are really easy to take apart, modify, and put back together. I had never turned a wrench on a car before and even I was able to swap out a fried alternator in about 20 minutes since it's right there, front and center. Spark plugs are obviously a bit harder to reach on all Subarus but it isn't as bad on these older models.

Yea I was pleased on the sparkplug location when I popped the hood I was worried with it being a boxer engine. I had the guys on DI ask me about the engine size. I haven't looked yet. They gave me the location to find the 18 or 22 by the power steering pump. I'll try to look today when I go out.

Thanks guys!

I installed some LEDs on the HVAC controls so we can see them at night.

Doesn't look too bad with the red from the Sony radio.

The newer ones are more of a pain than the old ones. On a 90s Subie you can usually get to them with the right tools, and even with the wrong ones the only thing that gets in the way is the washer bottle and maybe the top of the air box. You don't even have to remove the washer bottle, just unbolt it from the strut tower and move it a few inches to the side and you can get to that rear plug easily.

The number should be easily visible on the top of the engine. It's fairly big but you may need a flashlight due to shadows and/or oil and dirt covering it. Like they said, should be by the PS pump and alternator. Both engines are very good and although they are EJ series, they did not have the head gasket issues that the early EJ25 engines suffered from. The EJ22 in my first-year Outback went over 200k miles in my possession and hit 300k owned by a friend. Last I heard, it was still on the road in beater status.

The lights in them are easy enough to replace if you get tired of the LEDs. It's been years since I did it, but I remember replacing bulbs in several of these climate controls. It was a tiny bulb attached to a small plastic base that secured to the back of the HVAC box with a quarter turn.
