Engine trouble following automated car wash

Hi,

I'm having trouble with my 2001 1.4 Zetec and was wondering if you chaps (or ladies) had any ideas what is wrong.

I took my car to the car wash on Friday and shortly after leaving the car wash I started to experience engine trouble.

First of all it seemed like the engine had hardly any power, a bit like having flat tyre. I got out and had a look and the tyres seemed fine. Drove on and it still didn't feel right. A bit further down the road and the engine malfunction light came on. I stopped and turned the engine off, waited a minute, started it again and the light was off. Drove a bit further and it came on again. Luckily I was close to home and managed to get there.

I called out the RAC/AA people and they said they couldn't do anything and it needed to go to Fords to go on their diagnostics computer.

The symptoms I'm getting are:
lack of engine power
white smoke coming out of the back which is a bit smelly (it was the first drive of the day when I checked that)
Sounds a bit dieselish but that goes a bit when I drive (I had to test it).
I can give it full revs no problem

I checked the fuel cap last night and it did seem a little bit dirty at the bottom (outside the cap but inside the flap) - maybe some water has got into the fuel tank?

I'm booked into Fords today, 12 mile journey there with the error light on (and sometimes flashing!).

The obvious thing might be there is some water in the engine somewhere.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Fords phoned me back within an hour of putting it in saying its the ignition coil and it will cost 52 plus vat plus labour -150 odd.

Overall that seems ok.

They just phoned me to say the car is ready for collection and they've taken it round the block and its fine. The engine malfunction light has now gone off too now apparently.

They didn't say anything more than it was fixed and they didn't spot anything else wrong with it.
