Question who makes the ztec engine? ford? mazda? other?

my friend has a 99 zx2 and was told it would be more expensive because it was a mazda motor. is this ture? his price was fair from several places, but now I am just curious, who actually makes the ztec motor?

If it is the ZX2, it has the EEC-IV ZETEC. We have the EEC-V in the Focus. I have no idea why they would say it was a Mazda motor. Like I said, the older 91-93 Escort GTs had a lot of Mazda in them.

The '97 and up escorts used the spi engine, and that engine came from the escort engines from 1981- 1990. they started life as 1.6 liters. The ZETEC motor I believe is cast, machined and built at the Lima Ohio Ford engine plant

The only U.S. Escort that ever used a Mazda motor was the 1991 - 1996 GT, which used a Mazda 1.8 liter twincam engine. It made 127hp at a time when the base Escort engine made (ahem!) 88hp. The GT was obviously a lot faster. If I remember correctly, there was briefly a time in the 80's that the Escort could have a Mazda diesel engine, too.

As for the Zetec, it was also used in the ZX2, and the Contour/Mystique platform, but I don't know if it was EXACTLY the same; I think there were a few differences.
