SVT info

So i just picked up a 04 SVT that has a messed up transmission and has been sitting for 5 years. I am debating if i should try and fix it up or just part it out. so what i am wondering what is all the differences between the stock ZX3 and the SVTF?

You can easily find someone selling a used trans and throw it in there. Bought my last one for $300 and it only had 56k on it. I wouldn't part it out due to transmission issues alone though.

SVT's are funny, you can buy one for $1500 and part it out for more $$ or use it make your zx3 a lot nicer, but still not an SVT. I vote just buy a cheap geartag someone is getting rid of. There are a more svt's dead because of a bad head parting the trans than you can shake a stick at.

but if you don't fix, the front bumper is highly sought after and the grill is all honeycomb shaped so grab it to match. The break front and rear make for a good upgrade. 17" rims, dark interior parts. spoiler, seats. If you found an EAP there are leather recaro seats, Mach 1 Hid's and 17spoke wheels). Engine parts there isn't much, you can swap the entire exhaust if isn't damaged, but most people just snag the header and have a custom pipe made to meet the stock exhaust. The stock airbox looks the same but the snorkel is bigger and the hole to the box is different so grab that to go with to save yourself the hassle of modding your zx3 hole. The suspension is lower like .5" and there are larger sway bars. The hatch spoiler is bigger.

This is all the difficult stuff to deal with and rarely done if your interested. The zetec trans I believe are swapable, so you could put the geartag on a regular zetec or mtx-75 on your svt zetec. There has been atleast 1 full motor swap into zx2 escort, but from what i've seen some people have put the svt head on their regular zetec. I've hear rumors on the bottom end crank rods pistons being the same, but i've also hear the svt has forged rods, and flater pistons too. IDK maybe i'm confused.

I believe this ^ is NOT the case. Do you know for a fact that the transmission is "messed up"?
An SVTF is too good a car to be parted out, it should be saved and appreciated for what it is.
Having said that, any car that has sat for five years with out having been properly prepared for long term storage, will certainly have issues. There will most certainly be corrosion from condensation, where ever there has been fluid, ie. brakes, clutch, motor. Condensation may also have caused mold and/or mildew in the interior carpeting, and other fabrics.
I believe a long hard look at the current condition of the car is warranted, before you spend a lot of money, only to discover that you are only half way there.
Good luck, and keep us posted.

Geartag (6speed) swaps have been done already. I don't remember if anyone wanted a 5 speed in their svt to try it, but it sounds possible just not popular.

I agree otherwise, how do you know the tranny is broke, and keep the SVT if you can.

thanks for the info.. yes the car has been sitting for 5 years and the last owner pulled a few parts that were easy to sell off. it had the Recaros in it and they sold off the front seats but not the rears, other then that most of the car is there. the bumpers are messed up due to some off-roading i would assume. as for the transmission there is about a 1.5 inch by 6 inch hole in the side of the bell housing. so yes i do know that it will need at-least a transmission. it only has 87,XXX miles on it and needs a little TLC to be back in nice shape. I do not know if the motor will turn over or not yet. as soon as it warms up and i can get outside to throw a belt on it i will see if will start. I am hoping that all that is wrong is the transmission because i would really like to fit it up into the nicest luxury focus on the road. I bought a base model ZX3 last march with the intentions of making this nice but now that i have found this SVTF i have a better starting point since it has more factory features.
