Ever try them for a season?

Ever get stuck in crawling/stopped traffic when your vehicle/tire combo. could drive at the speed limit safely in the existing conditions? Grumble about that?

"Skill" only lets you maneuver within the limits of the traction available. Raising those limits significantly gives you more options. Travel faster & safer, more reserve for changes in conditions or "emergencies", many pluses to having the right gear for the circumstances.

It's like putting a set of old knobbies on your Sports Bike & saying Skill can make up for it - you reach the point where skill won't help a lot sooner.

Winter is coming.....this post needs a bump

I was shocked to read some of the posts here on winter tires and thought this thread needed a bump for more discussion. As a person living in Eastern Canada where winters are harsh and stupidly cold, I wanted to point out that most collisions and vehicles found in ditches are on all season tires. Why? Because they cannot stop or control the vehicle on a tire not designed for the winter season.

Best advice is get winter tires, drive according to conditions and slow down it's not summer out there!

I have a set of winter tires for my wife's Fusion and my Super Duty (and soon to be Focus). They are "budget" oriented (General altimax ARCTIC) and it was night and day difference. Obviously traction going forward is increased. Turns are much more planted vs. slippery. Stopping??? Sometimes I forget I have better traction so when I stop briskly, I have had to pull ahead or to the side while someone slowly slides by almost rearing me. The winter tires do an awesome job at evacuating slush so I don't "float" on or follow other people's tracks.

It is both comical and annoying watching other drivers attempt to climb hills or stop somewhat suddenly (remember, traffic lights use the same programmed timers/patterns whether it is summer or winter). Also, some of my commutes to the cabin are 5+ hours to go deer hunting and ice fishing. If I were to white knuckle the entire drive because I had all seasons, I would be fatigued within an hour. On the flip side, I usually make a quick $10-$20 for a five minute tug when a small car (with all seasons) or an SUV/Truck (bald tires or MUD tires... mud tires are terrible in snow) is in the ditch or field. Some nights, I can find 2 or 3 people just along my normal country road commute.

Disclaimer: Vehicle recovery done with a 4wd 8000lb truck, do not tow vehicles with a Focus. Rather, drive by confidently with your winter tires and wave.

I would recommend that you move up to a 16" tire. Consider a 205 55 16 or 215 55 16. The 15" look to small on the focus in my opinion.

I already have 15" steelies from when I bought my first set of winter tires 3 years ago; I'm just replacing the tires. But I agree, little baby wheels.

I went with the 195 width to cut throw snow/slush to (allegedly) help prevent hydroplaning.

lol, just rewatched the video, and read the youtube comments. the whole vid is a scam. many of the shot use the same car and same tyres. not a comparison at all.
