unleash the beast - been a crazy 2 months with this car

Back in early September I stripped 3rd gear in my 5spd...completely rounded it off. So frustrated I ordered a JDM V7 STi 6spd, non dccd, with a front 1.5 way surtrac LSD.

New 6spd knob

Came out great...car was so much fun to drive. Got it finished mid September, hard to source some of the parts.

Then...got a TD06SL2-20G, got it on, got retuned. Made 425/400, car pulled hard. Was having a coolant boiling issue, thought maybe radiator was causing the problem. So got a Koyo Aluminum Radiator

Well, installed, that wasn't the problem. Car had been tracked and pushed so hard that every time the car was getting into boost it was stretching the head studs and separating the block. Causing coolant to boil over and blow everywhere.

These are tear down pics of the block.

Car is still at the shop, getting a build bottom end. Forged rods, pistons, cosworth bearings, full balance and blue print. ARP rod bolts and custom age 625 head studs. Should be pretty bullet proof.

Also going to be ordering a TD06SL2-3076R twin scroll turbo that is capable of 550+...on E85 on a low level tune it'll make 500 with no problem. Which is what I'll be shooting for.

wow, that car has to be such a blast to drive..or it will be once its out of the shop and not causing you any more headaches.

Any changes to the exterior from last time you posted or has everything been under the hood, so to speak?

Nope, pretty much done on the exterior. Well shouldn't say that, it'll be going into paint and getting body work done this spring, but that's all pretty hush hush.

I do have new rear Brembos to do, but I am going to paint both them and the fronts before I install them.

That's pretty much how it sits right now. Wheel color is going to change and I have rear spacers I need to do.

So you were lifting heads with 425/400? That is what a friend of mine's 05 STI is making and it is tracked hard with no issues. Maybe that .5 liter is the difference at this level and the heads are staying on the car.

I am pretty sure I was lifting at 360/390. All STis have a 2.5L, all 06+ WRX have the 2.5L as well. Exact same headstuds. What is the definition of tracked hard, my car has seen about 35 autocrosses, 6 big track days, countless 1/4 passes, and quite a few freeway pulls. It's seen a lot of WOT, run hard and put away wet.

Some cars don't have the issues, some do. If he isn't he is lucky. It's not super common, but it does happen.

Sounds like a pretty typical Subaru owner's story to me!

Fun cars but man they are just not made well-enough to be pushed like that.

This gets used hard on the street and full track days at Loudon, Watkins Glen, LimeRock during the season. He is in the intermediate grouping at these track day sessions. The main issue he has at the moment is keeping brakes on the car for longer than 1 track day!

Ohhh, the things I would do for a STI... Prob the only car I would sell my SVT for. Too bad the 2011+ are over $30K... Man it sucks to be a poor college student.
